Hampton claimed the Middlesex 7s title on Wednesday, backing up their Plate win at the Hiscox Reigate Charity 7s on Sunday.
The sixteen team tournament was hosted by St Benedict’s Schoo,l who went on to lift the Plate, with some top sides gathering for an intense competition.
Hampton were drawn in Group B alongside St Paul’s, Sir William Borlase’s Grammar, and John Fisher’s 2nd VII, and they played with style to come out on top of that group.
That sent them through to the semi finals along with the winners of the other three groups, three sides with plenty of 7s pedigree themselves. Bath’s AASE side, Beechen Cliff, came out top of Group A ahead of St Benedict’s, London Oratory, and Emanuel, while Harrow, who have won many a Middlesex 7s title, topped Group C ahead of Mill Hill, Windsor Boys’, and Weston College. John Fisher meanwhile secured top spot in Group D, holding off Seevic College, Henley College, and UCS.
Hampton were drawn against John Fisher in the semi finals and put in a good display for a 21-7 victory, while Harrow put in a superb performance to keep Beechen Cliff scoreless, winning 19-0.
That pitted these two excellent 7s sides against them in the final, and it was a final that lived up to all of the expectations. The two pushed each other all the way and it ended in dramatic circumstances, with Hampton scoring with the last play to take the game by a whisker at 19-17.
Meanwhile St Benedict’s had taken the Plate, contested by those finishing second in the groups, after a 21-5 semi final win over Mill Hill they beat Seevic College 28-12 in the final.
The Shield, for those finishing third in the group, saw Henley College take the title, beating Windsor Boys’ 25-5 in the final after a 22-5 victory over Sir William Borlase’s in the semi. Over in the Bowl, for those finishing bottom of the initial groups, UCS took the title with a 20-12 victory over Emanuel in the final.
Ultimately though the day was all about Hampton and Harrow, two sides that are sure to be contesting right at the top end over the coming weeks of the 7s season.
