School 7s: School 7s Roundup – Wednesday 6th March

BECOME A PATRON

Wednesday was a key day on the school 7s calendar with big tournaments taking place all over the country.

With the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s just a few weeks away, the Edwin Doran Surrey Schools Senior 7s less than a week away, and the Quilter Cheviot North of England Schools 7s on Sunday, the season is getting towards crunch time and each tournament in the build up is key for preparation.

Among the favourites for Sunday’s Quilter Cheviot North of England Schools 7s will be Sedbergh, the most successful side in the tournament’s history. They are looking in sensational form at the moment as they backed up Saturday’s title at the Worksop 7s with a dramatic win at the Ampleforth 7s on Wednesday.

The Ampleforth 7s is one of the biggest tournaments in the region, and so it proved with some brilliant performances throughout. Sedbergh reached the final with a much changed squad from that at Worksop, and they met a determined RGS Newcastle side, who won the St Joseph’s Festival in the fifteen-a-side season, remember. RGS Newcastle led and looked as though the might take the title only for Sedbergh to seal a dramatic score in the last play of the game to seal their second big 7s title in a week, 17-12, leaving them looking very confident ahead of Sunday’s tournament.

Another side who will have picked up a huge among of confidence ahead of that North of England 7s tournament are Wirral Grammar School, who are actually drawn alongside Ampleforth College.

They were at the Birkenhead 7s on Wednesday alongside another of the big favourites for the North of England 7s, Kirkham Grammar School. Kirkham picked up the Colston’s 7s title on Sunday and looked on for another as they led Wirral in the Birkenhead 7s final. However Wirral refused to be beaten, scoring a dramatic late try to take the title with a 19-17 scoreline, leaving them surely looking forward to that massive tournament on Sunday now.

Kirkham’s 2nd VII were in action at the Austin Friars 7s where Ripon Grammar School came away with the spoils after some excellent performances that included victory over that Kirkham Grammar side as well as a very strong Newcastle School for Boys team.

One of the biggest tournaments of the day was the KES Stratford 7s, attracting some of the biggest names in Midlands school rugby. On the 7s field at the moment few seem bigger than Bromsgrove, who secured their second title in a week after they beat Stowe in the final to add to their Solihull 7s title a week prior. KES themselves meanwhile won the Plate, while KES Aston picked up the Shield and Crypt the Bowl.

There were a couple of County tournaments too to go alongside the Middlesex 7s, for which you can see a full roundup here: Middlesex 7s Roundup.

Hertfordshire was Oaklands College secure the Cup title, while the Plate went to an exciting St Albans side. Meanwhile in the Kent 7s Eltham College secured the title for the second year in a row and look to be playing some tremendous rugby, meanwhile Dartford Grammar and Ravens Wood picked up the other silverware.
