School 7s: Worth 7s Draw & Preview

The Worth School 7s takes place on Sunday, a key tournament on a busy weekend of schoolboy rugby.

With the Edwin Doran Surrey Schools Senior 7s just around the corner and the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s at the end of the month, every tournament is now key in preparation for that that, and with a strong field, the Worth 7s will be one of the most important.

Unfortunately, as with so many tournaments, last year’s Worth 7s had to be cancelled. That means that Brighton College remain the holders after their 33-0 triumph over Bedford in the 2017 final.

Indeed Brighton have won three of the last four tournaments at Worth, winning in 2016 and 2014 too. They are drawn this year in Group A, where they face some strong sides in the form of Felsted, Shiplake College, and City of London Freemen’s, while Hurtpierpoint College’s 2nd VII are likely to be a good outfit too.

Group B meanwhile hosts Hampton’s 2nd VII, who reached the final of their tournament last week, the 1st VIIs will be the focus of many though, with The Oratory likely to be strong alongside Sutton Valence, Lord Wandsworth College, and Bethany.

Group C is a brute of a group, featuring some really strong sides. The Seaford 7s champions, Dulwich College, will be the headline act, but will face stern competition in the form of 2017 Plate winners KCS Wimbledon and their 2016 counterparts, Campion, as well as King’s Canterbury and a Brighton College 2nd VII that will be strong.

The hosts, Worth, who are the reigning Trophy champions, are in Group D. Their group features a Bromsgrove side that claimed the Solihull 7s title in style last week and will fancy a crack at another. Alongside them are three strong sides, Gordon’s, Reigate Grammar, and St Paul’s.

The competition will see the top two sides from each group head to the Cup quarter finals, while those finishing third will be straight to the Plate semi finals. Fourth will head to the Trophy semis, with those finishing bottom of the group taking part in the Vase semi finals.

There is also a Colts tournament, last won in 2017 by Hurstpierpoint College, a group that have gone on in 6th form to produce some outstanding rugby.
