School 7s: Merchiston Castle 7s Draw & Preview

BECOME A PATRON

Scotland’s most prestigious school 7s tournament takes place on Sunday, the Merchiston Castle 7s.

There are tournaments at U18, U16, U15, U14, and U11 level, with eight teams in each of them. In the U18 tournament the eight sides are split into two groups of four teams each.

From there the top two in each group go to the Cup semi finals, while those finishing third head straight to a 5th/6th place play off and those finishing last go to a 7th/8th place play off.

Weather got in the way last year but in 2017 Merchiston Castle secured back to back titles, George Watson’s College won it back in 2015. Between the two of them they dominated across the age groups in 2017, Merchiston winning at U18 and U16 levels, with George Watson’s winning at U15 and U11 levels. Only Stewart’s Melville could get in on the act, winning the U14 tournament.

Stewart’s Melville are grouped alongside the hosts, Merchiston Castle, in Group 1. Both will have ambitions of silverware again this year, those Merchiston Castle U16s of 2017 are now U18s, while Stewart’s Melville’s U14 sides will now be aiming for the U16 title.

Joining those two in group 1 are two other legends of Scottish rugby, Loretto and Dollar Academy making this a real minefield of a group from which to progress to the Cup semis.

Over in Group 2 George Watson’s will be mounting their challenge, with that U15 group of 2017 now scrapping in the U18s. Joining them in the group are 2017’s losing finalists, Strathallan, who will be hoping for one better this year. Also in the group are Earlston High School and the famous Fettes College.
