The U18 Schools Bowl final between King’s Worcester and Glyn kicks off at 2pm on Tuesday.

Held at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways Stadium it will feel a bit like home for King’s Worcester, who play there every year in the Modus Cup against old rivals RGS Worcester.

In the past King’s have had some wonderful teams, but the last couple of years have been a bit of a struggle from a results point of view, however this U18 Bowl run has been a huge boost and there have been some truly outstanding performances.

None more so than in their 33-31 semi finals victory over Ampleforth College, where they 24-7 down at half time and 31-19 down with less than ten minutes left to play. To win in those circumstances was quite simply sensational and showed the character of this group. It will take something very special to beat them now.

There were some fears that with that semi final having taken play in mid-January that they could be rusty, but a game against KES Camp Hill last week blew out any cobwebs and saw them secure a good win.

Glyn have semi final comeback tale of their own though having been 7-5 down to Mount Kelly in that semi final. With time running down though they scored the try to make it 10-7 and send them through to Sixways.

It is by far and away Glyn’s most successful knockout run, their previous best being a Vase quarter final back in 2001. King’s Worcester have had more recent good runs, a 2018 Vase quarter final and a Cup semi final back in 2012.

Glyn’s run through this competition has been excellent, as you would expect from a side that only narrowly ended up in the Bowl anyway. Only a handful of sides have beaten them outside of this Bowl run, and even then only Whitgift by anything approaching a comfortable margin, Cranleigh only squeaked past them by a point, St Benedict’s by three.

So these are two sides that are bursting with confidence that will be gracing the Sixways surface setting up for what should be a cracking game of rugby and a day that neither sides’ players will ever forget.

Both deserve huge credit for making it this far, and while only one will come away with the silverware on Tuesday, both will come away with a huge amount of respect from the watching schools rugby world.
