Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s: U14 Draw – Will Whitgift retain the Cup?

Over recent years the U14 tournament at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s has become a huge event and it looks like it will be massive again this year.

160 teams are competing over Thursday 28th and Friday 29th March and will eventually be whittled down to one. Whitgift were that one side last year, they are in Group A alongside Bristol Grammar, Uppingham, and Ysgol Gyfun Bro Myriddn.

Taunton School were the runners up but are not in the draw this year, leaving tournament legends Millfield in bottom group, NN, alongside Radley College, Portsmouth Grammar, and Welsh side Pontarddulais.

Like the senior tournament, the U14 tournament also has a Plate competition, for those losing out on the elimination round, which pits the winners of each group against another, winner heaving to the Cup last 16 pools and the loser to the Plate last 16 pools.

Cheltenham College won last year’s Plate but their reward is a tough one, Group F alongside Epsom College, RGS Worcester, and St Edward’s Oxford.

Kirkham Grammar were the side they beat in that final, and Kirkham too have a bit of a brute of a group over in Group N, with Bedford, Tonbridge, and Whitmore High School for company. Indeed almost all of the Groups look pretty brutal as the U14s, like the Colts, is not split Cup and Vase so every school is drawn in one big tournament.

Only the winners of each group progress to that elimination round, from which 21 sides will progress to the last 16 (slightly confusingly) pools. They are split into seven groups of three and the winners of each group progress to the quarter finals alongside the best runner up, from there the tournament is a straight knockout. The Plate tournament, made up of the elimination round losers, follows the same format.
