Sedbergh and Kirkham Grammar School went through the opening day of the Sedbergh Super 10s with a full house of wins to top their respective Day 1 Pools.

Barnard Castle meanwhile topped the other pool after finishing ahead of points difference after a three way tie with Brighton College and King’s Macclesfield, all three had beaten Millfield and then won one and lost one against the other two in the group.

Sedbergh were by far and away the team of the day though, in their three games they scored a remarkable 143 points, conceding just 12. The offloading game that they brought to their Buskholme pitch was simply too much for RGS High Wycombe, Llandovery College, and Bristol Grammar School to handle, with the likes of Theo Manihera and Michael Cooke adding some scything running alongside it.

Confidence is clearly high after their Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s trumph just 48 hours ago, and as they chase a remarkable ‘double-triple’, winning the Daily Mail Trophy, Rosslyn Park, and Sedbergh Super 10s all in one year in back to back seasons, it looks like it will take something special to stop them.

Kirkham Grammar certainly had their moments though, they were in the larger five team group, the other two had just four but played longer games, they beat all four sides, QEGS Wakefield, Stamford, Seaford College, and KES Bath.

While not as dominant as Sedbergh, Kirkham were in complete control in them all, their closest challengers were Seaford College who were probably unlucky to end up 21-10 behind rather than something closer.

In terms of drama though, Group 3 was where it was at. A youthful Millfield side lost to Barnard Castle, Brighton College, and King’s Macclesfield, but when those three played each other, the cards fell all over the place.

King’s Macclesfield beat Barnard Castle early on but then lost to Brighton College despite a brilliant performance from Will Davies, undone in particular by some superb kick off work from Brighton. In the last round of the day though, Barnard Castle just squeaked it against Brighton, 19-15, and then in a final twist King’s managed to edge past Millfield, 29-27, leaving all three on two wins and a loss.

Barnard Castle had by far the superior points difference though, +21 to Brighton’s +8 and King’s Macclesfield’s +3, sending Barnard Castle and Brighton through to the Cups automatically, with King’s joining them as a best third place side.

RGS High Wycombe’s two wins from three sent them through alongside Sedbergh in Group 2, however in Group 1 it was more complex. QEGS and Seaford had drawn, but Seaford had lost to Stamford while QEGS had beaten them.

Once that was all shaken out, that left QEGS in second place, Stamford in third, and Seaford in fourth, sending Stamford, with their two victories, as the final side into the Cup Groups for tomorrow.

Fortunately the Cup draw keeps the two unbeaten sides from Day 1 apart, Sedbergh and Kirkham Grammar. Hosts Sedbergh are drawn in Cup Pool 1 with Day 1’s Group 1 and Group 3 runners up QEGS Wakefield and Brighton College, as well as the third place side in Group 1, Stamford.

Kirkham Grammar meanwhile have the other Day 1 Group winner in their Cup Pool 2 group, Barnard Castle. Joining those two giants are RGS High Wycombe, runners up in Group 2, and King’s Macclesfield, who beat Barnard Castle 29-21 in their opening game of the day, remember.

The winners of the two Cup groups will play each other in the Cup final, which should be a 3pm tomorrow. Meanwhile the action will start at 9.30am with the Plate competition, with is a five team round-robin, with the side finishing top between Llandovery College, Millfield, Bristol Grammar, Seaford College, and KES Bath taking the silverware.

It should be an intense day of competition on Monday, across both Cup and Plate, but based on Sunday’s evidence it is going to take something very special to beat this Sedbergh side that is riding a wave of confidence at the moment and playing some utterly breathtaking rugby as they chase this remarkable schools rugby ‘double-triple’ prize.
