The 2019 AASE League kicked off on Wednesday and produced plenty of entertainment across the six games.

Defending champions Hartpury College got off to a flying start in the Southern Conference as they beat the new side in the league, City of Oxford College, by a stunning 69-14 margin to send a big early message to the rest of the league.

It was one of five home wins across the six opening round games, only Leicester Tigers affiliates Brooksby Melton College managed an away win as they defeated Myerscough College 27-3 in impressive style.

Elsewhere in the Northern Conference Oaklands College and Bishop Burton College were engaged in a real tussle, with Oaklands taking the win on home soil 24-17.

Stourport High School meanwhile showed City of Oxford College not to lose heart, they were new boys last year and found life tough at times but came out of the blocks brilliantly in this opening round in the northern conference as they defeated Moulton College 59-26.

Over in the Southern Conference it was obviously Hartpury making the headlines, but the only other AASE winners, Exeter College, were also off to a winning start as they defeat SGS Filton College in a really tight game 19-12.

St Paul’s Catholic College meanwhile were off to a bit of a flyer as they beat Truro College 40-20 for a very bright start to the campaign.

Each conference had one side with a bye week, Gosforth in the North and Beechen Cliff in the South. Next week Gosforth will open their account with a trip to Bishop Burton College, while Beechen Cliff will be travelling to SGS Filton College.
