AASE League: Round 3 Roundup – Newcomers secure their first win

Wednesday was a huge day in the AASE League as Round 3 really saw things get shaken up with some very noteworthy results.

Ahead of the round it was already a sure thing that one side in each conference would lose their perfect record as in each conference there was a game between two sides yet to lose or draw. In the end though, there were far greater headlines that that.

The big headline of the day came from the Southern Conference and it was that newcomers City of Oxford College picked up their first ever AASE League victory. Even more impressive was that they did it against 2017 champions Exeter College, who started the game with a perfect two out of two record after impressive victories over SGS Filton College and Truro College. City of Oxford meanwhile had a bit of a rude awakening to AASE life with a heavy defeat to Hartpury College in their opener, however last week they stepped up well to tighten the gap to St Paul’s Catholic College, and this week clearly they moved up a level again for a first victory, a fantastic effort and the story of the AASE season to date.

Elsewhere in the Southern Conference Beechen Cliff, finalists last year, picked up their first win after they lost their first game last week. They beat Truro College 26-8, condemning the Cornishmen to a third defeat from their three games.

After a bye week last week Hartpury College were back in action this week, going head to head with fellow unbeaten side St Paul’s. As so often is the case with Hartpury, they did not skip a beat scoring 36 points and conceding none to keep their perfect record in tact.

The build up in the Northern Conference was to the head to head between the two sides with perfect win records so far, Oaklands College and Brooksby Melton College. A cracking game unfolded, and it was Brooksby Melton College that emerged with their perfect record still in tact, winning 39-26 away from home.

Elsewhere in the Northern Conference Myerscough College secured their first victory of the season, beating Stourport High School by an impressive 45-12 margin.

The third game in the Northern Conference saw Gosforth Academy pull out their full bag of tricks against Moulton College for a stunning 79-13 victory, making it two wins from two for them and a third tough defeat from three for Moulton.

Next week Bishop Burton return after their bye and face Moulton, while Gosforth travel to Brooksby Melton for what should be one of the games of the season so far, Oaklands meanwhile travel to Myerscough with Stourport having the bye week.

In the South City of Oxford, fresh from their win, host Beechen Cliff, with Hartpury College welcoming an Exeter College side that will be eager to bounce back well. SGS Filton College meanwhile return to action at Truro College with St Paul’s enjoying the bye.
