AASE League: Round 4 Roundup – Gosforth claim key victory in North Division

BECOME A PATRON

Things are looking tight at the top of the AASE league conferences after an exciting fourth round on Wednesday.

In the Northern Conference Oaklands College took top spot by a point with an incredibly tight victory at Myerscough College, 24-23. Myerscough are playing far better than their fifth spot in the table suggests, without doubt, but Oaklands are playing some really clinical rugby just now and sit at the top of the table.

They are just a point clear of Gosforth Academy though, who have a game in hand. Gosforth pulled off probably the result of the conference so far at Brooksby Melton College on Wednesday. Not because it was a shock, indeed it felt like a game that could go either way, but because of its importance. Brooksby Melton have looked excellent so far this season, but Gosforth were looking ruthless too and were outstanding on Wednesday for a 33-12 victory to leave them level on points with their hosts but with that game in hand.

Bishop Burton College meanwhile picked up their first victory of the campaign, a 52-5 victory at Moulton College, whose start to the season has been a really tricky one.

Over in the Southern Conference Hartpury College are five points clear of the chasing pack after another strong victory, this time defeating the only other AASE champions in history, Exeter College, 46-29. A result that leaves them as the only remaining unbeaten side in the conference.

Beechen Cliff moved into second on points difference thanks to a 31-3 victory at City of Oxford College, the newcomers could not repeat last week’s heroics of their first ever AASE victory. Beechen Cliff are now level with St Paul’s Catholic College, who had a bye, and Exeter College, all three five points behind Hartpury.

Truro College meanwhile picked up their first victory of the campaign, winning a very tight game against an SGS Filton College side that has really been impressing. It ended 8-6 in Truro’s favour, their first victory but not quite enough to lift them from the foot of the table.

Next week sees plenty of interesting games, Gosforth hosting Myersbough with Bishop Burton and Brooksby Melton going head to head while Oaklands host Stourport. The south sees two top end of the table clashes as Beechen Cliff host Hartpury in a repeat of last year’s final and Exeter College welcome St Paul’s, Filton meanwhile host City of Oxford. Moulton College and Truro College have next week’s byes.
