Schools Rugby Midweek Preview: Champions Trophy, Schools Cup, Croydon derby part of a big wee

After another brilliant weekend of schools rugby we head into another busy midweek, with a number of massive games taking place.

There is plenty of rugby right through the week, including a few fixtures in the Champions Trophy and Schools Cup as well as a number of other exciting games.

Tuesday

On Tuesday Leicester Grammar School host Wellingborough in the Schools Vase. These two are ahead of the game relative to the rest of the competition, playing a third round tie in the Midlands A section after Leicester’s 41-0 victory over Bishop Stopford and Wellignborough having a second round bye.

There are also a couple of Scottish Schools Cup games on Tuesday with Morrison’s Academy heading to Bell Baxter, while in a really high level fixture George Heriot’s host George Watson’s College.

Elsewhere one of the biggest games of the week will be the Oxford derby at St Edward’s as they welcome Radley College. It is sure to be a packed and excitable atmosphere, these games have so much history and tend to provide plenty of tension and excitement.

King’s Ely meanwhile host Wymondham College while Sidcot host Clifton High School, one of the bigger games is an exciting contest between Downside and King’s Bruton.

Last year The Leys travelled to Queen’s College Taunton and a fine game developed, this year it is The Leys doing the hosting and another exciting game ought to ensue.

There is also a cracking looking evening fixture as Denstone College look to bounce back from defeat to Sedbergh after a fine start to the season when they take on 2018 Schools Vase champions, Langley.

Wednesday

The big headline game on Wednesday is almost certainly the final Champions Trophy first round game as Hampton host Tonbridge. Tonbridge are former Champions but in the last couple of years it has been Hampton with the upper hand, indeed last year they beat the reigning champions Dulwich College to knock them out. The draw for the second round was made on Friday (you can see that draw here) so the winners of this one already know their next game, a trip to an excellent Berkhamsted side.

There are a couple of Schools Cup games on Wednesday too. In South West B Dr Challoners’ host The Crypt in one of the late first round games. The winners will face a trip to in form former champions RGS High Wycombe.

Over in London & South East A Mill Hill and UCS meet in the second round after Mill Hill earned a tight win over Watford Grammar in round one and UCS beat former champions St Benedict’s.

The Vase also sees plenty of exciting action, in North A Yarm travel to Gateshead College for a second round clash, with the winners heading to Austin Friars next up.

Over in the London & South East sections, section A has Reigate Grammar School heading to London Oratory in Round 2. It is Reigate’s first game after a first round bye, while London Oratory beat Royal Alexandra and Albert 36-0 in the opening round. The winners face Harris City Academy next, who have a second round bye. Over in the B section Coopers’ Coborn host Southend High, with a trip to Robert Clack the reward for the winner in round 3.

There is also some Schools Bowl action on Wednesday, Princethorpe College heading to Kenilworth, with King Henry VIII, Coventry hosting KES Birmingham, while Rydal Penrhos meanwhile host Oswestry. In the South West Sheldon head to St Laurence.

There are some massive non-knock-out games on Wednesday too, not least the fearsome Croydon derby between Whitgift and John Fisher. The form guide might have Whitgift, who are the reigning Schools Cup champions, but in the white hot fever of the Croydon derby form goes out of the window. This will be an enormous and tense contest. Fellow Croydon based side, Trinity, are also in action on Wednesday as they host Emanuel.

Elsewhere Hayes will want to have a big performance when they hsot St oalve’s Grammar while, sticking in the South East, Robert Clack host Beth’s Grammar and Kent College welcome Duke of York’s RMS and Reading take on Halliford, meanwhile the impressive Reading Blue Coat head to Cokethorpe.

Kirkham Grammar have been in stunning unbeaten form so far this year, on Wednesday they host QES Kirkby Lonsdale, though they are likely to rotate players through.

There is more Scottish Schools Cup action on Wednesday with Marr College hosting Glasgow Academy, while back in England Emmanuel College hsot Durham College and Prince Henry’s welcome Cleeve.

A massive game in the north west of England sees St Ambrose College take on Wilmslow High School, a game between two sides with a proud history. Former Schools Cup champions St Peter’s Gloucester are also in action in a tough game as they welcome Solihull, who will be looking to bounce back from defeat to Bromsgrove on Saturday.

Elsewhere Worksop College are in action at home to Hall Cross, while Queen Ethelburga’s travel to King’s Grantham, with St Edward’s welcoming Rendcomb College in Cheltenham, and Saint Cecilia’s hosting Wetherby.

Devon sees Plymouth College host West Buckland, while elsewhere John Hampden host Sir William Borlase’s and Adams Grammar head to KES Five Ways.

There is also a massive occasion at Haileybury as they host the Hertfordshire Cup, which will see most of the top sides in the county head to the famous old school, who are in fantastic form, for a huge day of exciting rugby.

Thursday

There is a big Schools Vase game in South West A as Mount Kelly welcome Wellington in the second round for what should be a good even contest.

Elsewhere Cathedral School Llandaff cross the Welsh border to take on Katharine Lady Berkeley’s, while Ratcliffe College host Hill House and Bethant travel to Ashford. There is a cracking looking contest in the South West too as Kingswood host Prior Park College.
