AASE League: Phase 2 Round 2 Preview – Teams knocking on the door of AASE Final

The AASE Final edges ever nearer and this week’s round of games will bring us a step closer to finding out which sides will be competing in it.

The winner of Division 1 Pool A will play the winner of Division 1 Pool B in the final at Allianz Park on Wednesday 4th December, and in Pool A particularly we could be all but certain of the winner by the end of this penultimate round of games on Wednesday.

Division 1 Pool A

Beechen Cliff and Gosforth Academy both picked up victories in last week’s opening round of this first phase of the league. The two now meet on Wednesday, with Gosforth hosting, and for the winner it will mean one foot in the final, such will be their advantage at the top. The quality in this pool is high though, so until things are mathematically done counting chickens is not going to be a useful exercise. Nevertheless, Wednesday’s match up is going to be a huge game between two of the best sides across either division.

The other game in Pool A sees the two sides that lost last week in action as Exeter College host Brooksby Melton College. Exeter gave it a really good go last week at Gosforth an managed to get a bonus point, so on their own patch they will be eager to go one better and get the victory. Brookbsy Melton are no easy side to stop, just ask one of the best sides in their Phase 1 conference, Oaklands College. Both sides need a victory in order to stay in the hunt for a place in the final.

Division 1 Pool B

Speaking of Oaklands College, they face the tough challenge of a trip to the champions, Hartpury College. Oaklands went down at home to St Paul’s Catholic College last time out so they need a victory in order to keep a hold of a chance of a place in the final. For Hartpury College though this is a chance to take themselves to within touching distance of yet another final, and on their own patch they will more than fancy their chances.

The other game sees St Paul’s Catholic College go in search of back to back victories as they travel to Myerscough College. Should they do it, and Hartpury win against Oaklands, it would set up a massive game next week between the two, at St Paul’s, to decide which will go through to the final. Of course there is a lot still to happen between now and then, beginning with the fact that after a tough defeat last week Myerscough College will be determined to secure the victory at home this week, particularly as another loss would end their chances of a place in the final.

Division 2 North Pool

After having a bye week last week, Stourport High School return to AASE action on Wednesday with a trip to Moulton College. Moulton are yet to record a victory this season and Stourport beat them well in the opening week of the term, however Moulton put in probably their best shift last week against Bishop Burton and, though they came up short, they will be absolutely raring to go for this one. Bishop Burton College meanwhile have the bye week this week.

Division 2 South Pool

City of Oxford College play their first AASE fixture since before half term as they host SGS Filton College. In their game earlier in the season Filton won 27-17 but it was a good game and with home advantage this time City of Oxford will fancy it. Filton are a top side though, they came so close to qualifying for Division 1 and last time out they beat Truro College, who this week have a bye.
