The penultimate round of 2019 AASE League action has set up for a thrilling final round next week, where the finalists will be decided.
The winner of the two top divisions, Pool A and Pool B, will meet in the AASE final on Wednesday 4th December at Allianz Park and this week the list of potential contenders narrowed.
Division 1 Pool A
A stunning 47-12 victory at the top team from last half term’s Northern Conference, Gosforth Academy, on Wednesday saw Beechen Cliff put themselves within touching distance of the final. They are five points clear at the top of the table with five remaining to be played for, so when they host Exeter College even just a losing or try scoring bonus point would see them into the final. Even without that they still could get there if points difference works out in their favour.
Exeter College put themselves in the frame to contend next week though thanks to a gritty and tight 21-19 victory at home over Brooksby Melton College, bouncing back well from last week’s defeat to Gosforth Academy. The result leaves Brooksby Melton the first side in the Pool to definitely be unable to qualify for the final.
Division 1 Pool B
Pool B is set to go down to a winner takes all game next week between reigning champions Hartpury College and fellow Southern Conference side St Paul’s Catholic College after both teams made it two wins from their two second phase games on Wednesday.
St Paul’s Catholic College travelled up to Myerscough College and put in a strong performance for a 26-5 victory, backing up last week’s victory over Oaklands College. Oaklands this week, meanwhile, travelled to Hartpury College who were in utterly clinical form once again as they raced to a 67-17 victory, to add to last week’s 61-3 victory. The results leave Oaklands and Myerscough out of contention, but set up for that spectacular game between Hartpury and St Paul’s.
Division 2 North Pool
Bishop Burton College remain top of the Pool despite a bye week this week as Moulton College and Stourport High School drew 17-17. The result was Moulton’s best of the season though, the first AASE game in which they have not been defeated and a superb way for them to wrap up their league campaign ahead of next week’s bye.
Division 2 South Pool
SGS Filton College guaranteed that they would finish top of the South Pool after they made it two wins from two in this second phase of the AASE league. They travelled to City of Oxford College and picked up a 32-25 victory in an entertaining game. They have a bye week next week as Truro College re-enter the fray to host City of Oxford College.
