Wednesday will see the 2019 AASE League finalists confirmed as the final round of league games takes place.
The winners of Division 1 Pool A and Division 1 Pool B will meet in the final at Allianz Park on Wednesday 4th December and this week will see the teams shoot out for the opportunity to compete in that showpiece event.
Division 1 Pool A
Beechen Cliff are in pole position in the conference, five points clear at the top and odds on to reach the final for the second year running. A solitary matchday point will see them into the final, in theory they may not even need one. They host Exeter College, for whom a big victory on Wednesday could see them squeak through. The odds are in Beechen Cliff’s favour though, they won by a stunning 52-0 margin against Exeter back in October, however in what is effectively a knock out match, all of that goes out of the window.
Should Exeter beat Beechen Cliff it would also bring Gosforth Academy into the equation. They last reached the final in 2017 but if Beechen Cliff lose and Gosforth win away at Brooksby Melton College, who are yet to pick up a victory in this phase of the league, then they could squeak through if the can score enough points.
Division 1 Pool B
The equation is a simple on in Pool B, it is a straight shootout between St Paul’s Catholic College and reigning champions Hartpury College. Those two have both won two out of two and meet at St Paul’s on Wednesday in a winner takes all game. When the two met earlier in the season Hartpury won 36-0, and they have been in stunning form in this second phase, getting past sixty points in both games. St Paul’s will test them though, and if they can do it then it would be one of the biggest stories in AASE history.
The other game in the Pool will settle third place in the pool as the Oaklands College and Myerscough College meet, both sides looking for their first victory in this second phase of the league.
Division 2 North Pool
Bishop Burton College travel to Stourport High School in the North Pool, both could end up finishing top of the pool ahead of Moulton College, who have played both of their games in the pool, earning a draw with Stourport last time out. Bishop Burton will be favourites to finish top, having scored seventy against Stourport before half term.
Division 2 South Pool
SGS Filton College have already guaranteed that they will finish top of the pool, despite having a bye this week, having won both of their games in the previous two rounds. Truro College therefore host City of Oxford College, with both sides looking for their first victory of this second phase of the league. Truro will fancy their chances, having won the corresponding fixture in the phase 1 league, however against Filton last time out City of Oxford did pick up two bonus points in defeat, an impressive effort.
