U18 Schools Cup: Brilliant week of Regional Finals lead to exciting Quarter Final draw

BECOME A PATRON

Following an exciting week of U18 Schools Cup Regional Finals action, the quarter final draw was made on Thursday.

It sees the eight regional champions split North/Midlands and London & South East/South West in what is the first ‘national’ stage of the competition, which becomes truly national at the semi final stage, which will take place in early March.

The quarter finals are scheduled to take place in the first week of December, assuming each of the schools has a window to schedule the fixture in.

U18 Schools Cup Quarter Finals

RGS Newcastle (North B) v Northampton School for Boys (Midlands B)

RGS Newcastle sealed the North B region after a superb 34-7 defeat of Woodhouse Grove on Wednesday, with skipper Phil Brantingham returning to the side and in try scoring form as his side took a 15-0 half time lead and then built on that for then 34-7 victory. Over in Midlands B Northampton School for Boys were in action on Thursday against Felsted. The former finalists showed the sort of form that they have demonstrated all tournament as they took a 34-12 victory over a Feslted side that had the likes of Rory Hutchinson and Ehren Painter supporting on the touchlines. Whoever wins this quarter final will have every chance of going right the way to the final, such is their strength.

Warwick (Midlands A) v QEGS Wakefield (North A)

These two sides seem to be inextricably linked in this competition, last year they met in the U15 final, Warwick winning 19-0, in 2018 they met in the U18 final with Warwick winning that 29-7, while in the 2017 quarter final Warwick were 13-11 victors. In 2016, meanwhile, they met in the semi at U18 level, QEGS winning that, and QEGS also winning the U15 final. The story of this pair’s rivalry is really the story of the Schools Cup in recent years. To get hear Warwick had to come through the toughest of regional finals against Bromsgrove, a nailbiting 13-12 victory that really could have gone either way. QEGS meanwhile enjoyed a 35-7 victory over Wirral Grammar to seal the North A slot. This is one of the great Schools Cup rivalries, two legends of the competition, and this will be one of the most hotly anticipated quarter finals.

Sherborne (South West A) v KCS Wimbledon/John Fisher (London & South East A)

Sherborne have one of the best records in the country this year and have built well on last year’s trip to the Plate final. Their South West A regional final on Thursday saw them put in an awesome performance to beat Taunton School 53-0, their most dominant victory of this Cup run so far. Against them in the quarter final will be the London & South East A regional champions, however there is still some time to go before that side is confirmed as KCS Wimbledon and John Fisher are yet to play that regional final. Whichever side wins though, they will have a task on their hands against this Dorset based outfit.

Abingdon (South West A) v Whitgift/Simon Langton (London & South East B)

Abingdon sealed their quarter final spot with a seriously impressive victory on Wednesday over Canford, a side with one of the best records in the country. The Oxford side won 27-21, inflicting a first in-season defeat of Canford this year. They will need to be on that level once more in the quarter final for they could be facing the reigning champions and one of the best sides around, Whitgift. However that is far from a sure thing yet, Whitgift are still to play Simon Langton Grammar in the London & South East B regional final and Simon Langton have been impressive, beating some strong sides along the way. They meet on Wednesday 27th November.
