Schools Rugby Midweek Preview: Sedbergh could seal third title on trip to Millfield

BECOME A PATRON

This week the Champions Trophy final and the various Schools Cup quarter finals will likely dominate the headlines but there is a huge amount of key action going on elsewhere, too.

Not least in Somerset where a Millfield side that is bang in form will be hosting a Sedbergh side for whom victory would seal a third unbeaten season and Daily Mail Trophy title in a row.

Below we take a look at what is to come outside of the knockout competitions, but you can use the links below to find our previews for those various competitions:

Wednesday

That huge game in Somerset could well prove just as big as some of those knockout games, with Sedbergh aiming for that third title in a row. A win of any sort would seal the title for them, and even a high scoring draw would force Cranleigh and Wellington College into needing bonus points victories against Canford and Tonbridge next weekend. Millfield will be a huge challenge for Sedbergh, though. Three impressive victories in succession leave them looking formidable, and since half term only Blundell’s have got the better of them in, by a slender 6-0 margin. It should be a cracking game, it almost always is, a real showpiece ending to the season for two of the most famous names in all of schoolboy rugby, not only that – it will be season defining.

There is plenty more to keep an eye on besides that game though, not least the excellent Denstone College in action again. They have tested themselves with their fixture list this year and have met that challenge with some great form. On Wednesday they will be hosting Queen Ethelburga’s and will be eager for yet another excellent performance.

The North West sees some fantastic games, not least Lymm High School v Wilmslow High School, two sides with fantastic reputations down the years that will be looking for a cracking performance. Along the road an impressive Lancaster RGS side will be hosting Cheadle Hulme in a game that should be a top contest. Meanwhile Bury Grammar and Rishworth will go head to head.

There are a few Anglo-Welsh battles on Wednesday too, former Schools Cup champions St Peter’s Gloucester are hosting Aberdare, while Christ College welcome The Oratory. Meanwhile Rydal Penrhos host Sir John Deane’s College.

Elsewhere Gordon’s, who have been playing some good rugby, will travel to Tiffin, while Oakwood Park make the trip to Sir Roger Manwood’s, with Bancroft’s welcoming Davenant Foundation.

Former Schools Cup finalists Old Swinford Hospital are in action at home to KES Aston in what promises to be a good game, while Bishop Vesey’s Grammar host KES Five Ways.

Whitgift are in Schools Cup action on Wednesday but their 2nd XV will be travelling to the ever-impressive Hayes, meanwhile Wallington County Grammar host Ravens Wood and Beth’s Grammar host Simon Langton Grammar.

Pangbourne College are hosting Cokethorpe, while Katharine Lady Berkeley’s head to Cleeve. Meanwhile Dam Alice Owens host Roundwood Park and KES Camp Hill travel to Abraham Darby.

There is a cracking looking derby in Cornwall as Truro School travel to Truro College to take on their non-AASE side. Elsewhere in the country Dr Challoner’s travel to Haberdashers’ and Eltham College make the short trip to St Olave’s Grammar.

Thursday

County Cup action dominates Thursday, outside of the RFU’s knockout competitions. Burford and Abingdon’s 2nd XV take each other on in their final, while in Leicestershire Ratcliffe College welcome Brooksby Melton College’s non-AASE side.
