Schools Rugby Weekend Preview: Friday/Saturday 13th/14th December

After a thrilling final weekend of the term for most last weekend, a few hardy schools are in action again this weekend ahead of their Christmas break.

Friday and Saturday both see fixtures, however with so few fixtures on the card this week’s preview does not feature a ‘Focus On’ section, just a brief look at all of the games coming up.

Friday

There are four big games under the lights on Friday evening as teams look to finish the term off with a particularly special occasion. At Blackheath RFC Bradford Grammar and Colfe’s meet for their annual clash, which is always a superb occasion. Colfe’s will have their work cut out this year though, Bradford Grammar have been in absolutely superb form this season.

Crossing north over London to Hertfordshire, Harpenden RFC will host a season finale for St George’s and Roundwood Park, with plenty of spectators expected to line the touchlines to celebrate to the two groups of players. Over at Bournville RFC KES Five Ways and KES Birmingham will meet in what should be a cracking contest between two well matched sides.

Another top notch contest should be Lymm High School v Cheadle Hulme at Lymm RFC on Friday night, two sides that have had strong seasons and that should put on a real show in this last outing of the term.

Saturday

Saturday features a few real stars of the school season to date, not least Schools Cup semi finalists Northampton School for Boys. They will be looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Sir Thomas Rich’s when they host fellow Saints Academy feeders, St Joseph’s College, who themselves will be determined to finish on a high after a tough defeat to Whitgift last time out.

Sir Thomas Rich’s, meanwhile, will be looking to carry on the momentum from that victory over NSB last weekend when they host former Schools Cup winners St Peter’s Gloucester on Saturday in what should be a fun finale to the season for the pair.

In the North West there are some cracking games, among them Wilmslow High School v Merchant Taylors’ and Manchester Grammar v St Ambrose College four sides that have all put in some excellent performances this year.

Skinners’ had a sodden victory over St Albans on Tuesday and will be looking to make it two in a week on Saturday when they travel to Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar. Meanwhile St Dunstan’s travel to Bancroft’s, and Reigate Grammar host Glyn in what should be an epic game to end the term on for the fair.

Crossley Heath are taking on Woodhouse Grove’s 2nd XV, their 1st XV take on the Lambs RFC on Sunday as the Lambs season cranks into gear. Meanwhile King Henry VIII Coventry host Abraham Darby.

Mount Kelly are on a brief tour of Ireland to kick off their Christmas break, on Saturday they take on Grosvenor Grammar. Meanwhile in Scotland Kelvinside Academy and Wellington School go head to head.
