It was another good weekend of schools rugby on Saturday, despite the weather halting progress in a few areas of the county.
Some top class school sides were in action, not least in South West London, where Hampton hosted Schools Cup semi finalists, Warwick. Both sides were missing key players to the U18 Academy League as always at this time of year, but it was Hampton who coped with that best to secure an impressive 15-6 victory.
John Fisher beat Warwick last week and were on song again on Saturday with a 12-0 victory over Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar. Meanwhile Dartford Grammar School won a top contest against Judd, 24-19.
Brighton College sealed a really tight 13-12 victory over Campion in seriously testing conditions. Campion usually enjoy those tricky conditions so it was a real testament to the work of the Brighton College players that they came away with the victory.
Millfield have had a busy start to the term, winning three from three, however on Saturday they sustained their first defeat to the term as Welsh invitational side Welsh Academicals travelled to Somerset and returned with a 28-19 victory. There was plenty of good news for Millfield over the weekend though, with a couple of players in action for the Lambs, and star full back Dan John being selected for Wales’ U20 6 Nations campaign as a schoolboy.
There was a top end clash in Yorkshire as QEGS Wakefield hosted one of Lancashire’s finest, Lancaster RGS. The game went the way of the red roses of Lancashire, with LRGS sealing an impressive 38-7 victory. Hymers College meanwhile beat Rishworth.
Manchester Grammar were in utterly brilliant form again Crossley Heath for a 57-5 victory, while Shrewsbury won against Adam’s Grammar, 19-10. King Henry VIII Coventry were on form too, 32-12 victors in the end against Repton.
St Benedict’s had a superb Saturday, they hosted a Northampton School for Boys side that admittedly were missing a few, but are Schools Cup semi finalists. The West London side were on fire, raining in the tries for an excellent 43-17 victory.
Old Swinford Hospital continue their strong season, they enjoyed a 19-7 victory over Bishop Vesey’s Grammar while KES Stratford earned a solid 26-5 victory over KES Camp Hill.
Scotland saw a fair amount of the day’s play lost to the weather but there was still plenty of room for some top rate performances, not least George Watson’s College, who beat Stewart’s Melville 48-14. Robert Gordon’s College were in flying form too, beating St Aloysius’ College 61-12, meanwhile Hutchesons’ were 26-19 victors over St Columba’s and Dundee High School saw off Glasgow Academy 26-10.

There was also some 7s this weekend as King’s Bruton hosted Milton Abbey, Prior Park College, and Queen’s College Taunton. Coming just two days after the release of the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s draws, the main 7s season is starting to feel as though it is approaching fast!
