Schools Rugby Weekend Roundup: Saturday 8th February

Storm Ciara rather battered the weekend’s school rugby, unsurprisingly – anyone that saw what it did to the Calcutta Cup game on Saturday evening could see that it was going to make life difficult for anone.

Most of Friday night and Saturday morning’s school rugby did manage to take place though, before Saturday afternoon and Sunday saw much of the proposed play take place.

15s

On Friday evening Hampton wrapped up their fifteen-a-side action for the year with a fantastic 39-0 effort against St Benedict’s, who have been enjoying some good form. The sides will be in action again soon though, not least with Hampton hosting their Founders’ Day 7s in a couple of weeks.

On Saturday some other impressive displays came in, not least a 40-0 away win for Whitgift at St Joseph’s College, the Croydon men are looking in top form ahead of their Schools Cup semi final next month.

Also in great form were Bishop Vesey’s Grammar, who beat KES Birmingham 50-7, while Gravesend Grammar beat Coopers’ Coborn 24-10.

Lancaster RGS again proved their class with a quite brilliant 38-0 effort over a Wirral Grammar School side that has been good this season.

There was a thriller at Old Swinford Hospital as they beat Sir Thomas Rich’s 33-24, and things were tight in Buckinghamshire too as RGS High Wycombe scored through a powerful maul and then defended for their lives for a 7-0 victory over Campion.

7s

The Pangbourne 7s was supposed to be the big 7s highlight this weekend, however Storm Ciara got in the way of that and saw it cancelled. There was 7s action on Saturday though, with ACS International School in Cobham wining the American School of London’s 7s tournament.

10s

On Saturday Durham School hosted their annual Bain 10s, with some of the very best in the region in attendance, among them the likes of Sedbergh, RGS Newacstle, and Pocklington. Ultimately though the title would go to another of the most famous names in school rugby, Barnard Castle, who saw off Grammar School at Leeds in the final.
