School 7s: Hampton School Founders’ Day 7s Draw – Big names set to go head to head

BECOME A PATRON

Wednesday afternoon sees 7s take over and the Hampton School Founders’ Day 7s will be one of the most important of the day, and indeed the school 7s season.

The last three winners are Cranleigh, Brighton College, and Hampton themselves, each has been a dominant force over the school 7s seasons in those years. Indeed Cranleigh have reached the last four finals in a row, in that time winning the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s twice, demonstrating just how vital a staging post this tournament is on the road to Rosslyn Park.

There are ten teams in attendance in total, split into two pools of five each. The winners of each pool will meet in the Cup final, while the runners up will meet in the Plate final. There was due to be a 2nd VII tournament as well, however sadly the recent weather has meant that there were not enough available pitches to hold both tournaments.

The hosts, Hampton, are in Group 1 and are looking to make it a remarkable fifth final in five years, with victories in 2016 and 2017. The only year that they missed out on the Cup final in that period was 2018, where they won the Plate.

Joining them in Group 1 are Brighton College, returning after a year’s absence with their last memory of the tournament being their title win in 2018, which followed victory in the Plate in 2017. Last year’s Plate was won by St John’s Leatherhead and they are also in this incredibly competitive Group 1. Joining those three are Hurstpierpoint College, who have some very exciting sevens players, and a St Benedict’s side that have already had some excellent showings in 2020.

Over in Group 2 are the reigning champions Cranleigh, who finally converted last year after those previous three losing finals in a row. They will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of their sides of 2011 and 2012 by going back to back at the Hampton School Founders’ Day 7s.

Alongside them are last year’s Plate runners up, RGS High Wycombe, who have proved formidable in the fifteen-a-side arena this year, and ought to be in the shortened format too, particularly given the likely conditions. Also in the group are John Fisher, whose Cup win in 2015 was sandwiched by Plate victories in 2014 and 2016. AASE side St Paul’s Catholic College are also in the Group, they have reached the Plate final on a couple of occasions but are yet to pick up silverware at the tournament so far. Roundup off the Group are Campion, who won the Cup back in 2008 and will be a tough nut to crack once again on Wednesday.

Overall it should be, as always, an incredibly tight tournament, played to a very high standard with some of the top teams in the country in action. One thing that is for certain is that whichever side wins it will be a big threat in the tournaments to come, including the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s.
