Felsted sealed the title at the Wisbech Grammar School 7s on Sunday as school 7s season kicked back into gear after a slow start.

A few late drop outs meant a bit of a reshuffle of the tournament, instead of a tournament split into two groups with a Cup and Plate final between the top two, the tournament saw all six remaining teams compete in a round robin format.

That meant five games for each side in a busy afternoon of rugby and there was no little quality on show, not least from Felsted, who won every game that they played in and only failed to register a bonus point in one game, a 19-0 victory over Culford.

The Essex men, who had entered late after the cancellation of the Worth 7s, were in flying form, beating the hosts 47-5 before a similar scoreline against King’s Ely, who would eventually finish in second place, and a stunning 59-5 victory over Wellingborough.

Against Norwich they secured an impressive 38-7 victory before their final game and closest of the tournament, that 19-0 effort against Culford.

Behind them though the tournament was hotly contested. King’s Ely finished up second and enjoyed victories over Norwich and Culford, while losing in a thriller to Wellinborough, 26-19, and drawing 0-0 with hosts Wisbech Grammar.

That victory over King’s Ely helped Wellingborough to fourth place, they had a handy 42-10 victory over Norwich as well to offset defeats to Culford, Felsted, and a narrow 20-19 defeat to the hosts in the opening game of the day. Culford, meanwhile, finished up in third thanks to that victory over Wellingborough plys a win against the hosts and a draw with Norwich.

Wisbech Grammar meanwhile finished in fifth, their high point being that victory over Wellingborough right at the start of the day, before signing off with that draw against King’s Ely.

It was Felsted that come away with the most credit though and they will be looking at the challenges ahead in this 7s season with plenty of confidence after such a dominant display on Sunday.
