School 7s: Oakham claim Uppingham 7s title at the home of their great rivals

Oakham impressively won the Cup at the Uppingham 7s, home of their nearest and oldest rivals.

The Rutland side beat high flying Bromsgrove, who won the KES Stratford 7s last week and are reigning Champions of the second tier tournament at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s, 24-12 in the final to complete a superb days work.

They had actually lost 38-19 to Bromsgrove in Group 2 earlier in the day, only sneaking through to the Cup semi finals by the skin of the teeth as that meant that they finished second in the Group.

Only the group winners and the best runner up would reach the Cup final, which meant that Oakham had to do better than the Group 1 and Group 3 winners.

Fortunately for them, that happened and sent them through to face Denstone College, who had topped Group 3, in the semi finals. Meanwhile Bromsgrove met the hosts, Uppingham, who had headed Group 1 ahead of Stamford, Framlingham College, and Oundle.

Bromsgrove won a tight one against a strong Uppingham side, 21-17, while Oakham impressed for a 19-14 victory over Denstone College to set up that final between the two Group sides.

Over in the Plate, meanwhile Stamford and Framlingham College had made it through from Group 1, with Stamford, second in Group 1, facing The Leys, third in Group 2, and Framlingham facing Group 3 runners up, Mount St Mary’s College.

Both got the business done, Framlingham beating Mount St Mary’s 21-14 and Stamford beating The Leys 28-12 to set up a repeat of their Group 1 game. Stamford had won that 19-7 but it was a far tighter affair in the Plate final. It still went the way of Stamford though, they won 10-7 to claim the silverware.

The main Cup was still to be decided though, and it was Oakham that claimed it, turning around their group stage loss for an impressive 24-12 defeat of Bromsgrove and a well earned piece of silverware to head into the rest of the 7s season with.

Over in the U16 tournament Uppingham claimed the spoils on home turf, beating Framlingham College 34-7 in the final, while Bromsgrove beat Stamford 20-12 to claim the Plate.
