As has been discussed in our previous rugby update videos we have our own ranking methodology which we employ to do our South African rankings.
The purpose of this of course is to take emotion and opinion out of the equation although as you will find out there is and always will be a degree of opinion involved in these rankings.
We would prefer a minimum of 5 games to have been played, however due to the pandemic we understand that the situation is different.
Our initial Top 20 is below, of course as more matches are played this will change heavily over the season. A brief explanation of our methodology will follow at the end of the rankings.
*Teams must have played at least 3 fixtures to qualify for our rankings
**Note that these rankings will change a lot as more fixtures are played
|2||Grey College||East & Central||7.00|
|T5||St Andrews College||Southern||5.00|
|8||Maritzburg College||East & Central||4.60|
|T16||Westville||East & Central||3.67|
We need 3 to 5 matches to initially categorize a school, we categorize schools from A – F depending on how we feel they are currently performing.
A: Top level schools, expect them to be Top 10 for the year.
B: Schools that we feel will fall within the Top 20, maybe even just outside
C: Schools that we feel will fall within the Top 35
D: Schools within the Top 50 or just outside
E: Schools within the Top 75, outside the traditional strong schools
F: Schools outside the Top 100, very rarely do we expect these schools to feature
Once a school has been categorized we view their results. We use a scale that awards teams points based on the Category School they played and the result. The maximum amount of points that can be earned is a perfect 10 and this is achieved by beating a “Category A” school by over 20 points.
Below is our scale:
|CLASSIFICATION||WIN 20+||WIN 10 – 19||WIN 1 – 9||DRAW||LOSS 9 LESS||LOSS 10 – 19||LOSS 20+|
What we seek to do is award schools for playing stronger opposition, there have been years in the past where schools have claimed Top 10 status through being unbeaten but have not played any “A Status” schools for example.
We look forward to any suggestions for improvement as always
