Schools Rugby: Weekend Roundup – Kirkham stay unbeaten as first games of 2022 excite

Hampton School vs Kirkham Grammar School-4

BECOME A PATRON

After the Christmas break school rugby returned in quiet fashion this weekend with a handful of games to ease us back into the new term.

The North West of the country saw the bulk of the action, where King’s Macclesfield were outstanding in a 21-3 victory over St Ambrose CollegeCalday Grange Grammar enjoyed a fun afternoon too, heading to Birkenhead and claiming a 19-8 victory.

One of the finest not only in the north west but in the entire country are Kirkham Grammar School, and despite missing plenty of players to Sale Sharks U18s duty, they travelled down to Old Swinford Hospital and kept their unbeaten record alive with a 21-12 victory as they head towards that Schools Cup semi final with Barnard Castle in March. Over in Wales, meanwhile, Scarisbrick Hall sealed an impressive 45-14 victory overSt David’s.

In the South West Sir Thomas Rich’s continued the fine form that we saw from them last term, opening their 2022 account with a victory as they hosted Solihull and secured a strong 19-5 victory.

In London there was a brilliant occasion that saw Hampton host Brighton College and Tiffin in a triangular that offered every player the chance to really go out and express themselves. No scores were kept and there were no conversions or penalty kicks at goal, among other law tweaks. The aim being to increase the ball in play time and to reward ambitious play and it paid off in style, despite the atrocious weather conditions. In games of just 30 minutes the tries were flowing, including six in the Hampton v Brighton College game. A rousing success!

This week things get a bit busier, with fixtures on Wednesday and Thursday before a strong fixture list on Saturday as the season ramps back up into full action, and we will be previewing it all in the coming days.
