Schools Rugby: Midweek Preview – Fixture list picks up as 2022 takes off

After a handful of school games to kick off 2022 on Saturday, things get a little busier this midweek as more teams come out of their Christmas hibernation and lace up the boots again.

There are some huge games as some of the biggest names in schools rugby take to the field and a great new rivalry finally gets underway, two months after the original date.

With the fixture list building up over the weekend and the coming weeks, it feels like the true start of schools rugby in 2022.

Wednesday/Thursday

Almost all of the fixtures take place on Wednesday, including that huge local rivalry game as St Joseph’s College and Ipswich School go head to head. St Joseph’s College are the long established ‘rugby school’ in the area, with the annual St Joseph’s Festival and a string of professional players. Ipswich are rapidly rising though, with Jacob Ford at the helm and a fixture list this year that has seen them competing with the likes of Whitgift and Kirkham Grammar School, and competing well. It should make for an absolute blockbuster fixture on Wednesday evening.

Elsewhere there is another huge clash as Millfield, unbeaten last term and in glorious style, host Sir Thomas Rich’s, who themselves had a fantastic term. The two will be missing plenty of their Academy League players but such is their depth we can expect a fantastic display of running rugby.

In a similar vein will be Whitgift v Henley College ought to be absolutely superb. Whitgift are always a strong side and have some terrific players, while last term Henley College showed their teeth on plenty of occasions, their link up with Ealing Trainfinders paying dividends en route to the Plate semis so far.

Elsewhere, there is a cracking game lined up in Yorkshire as Bradford Grammar and Ashville College go head to head in a first bit of action of 2022 for the pair.

In the Midlands KES Camp Hill and KES Stratford are in action in what should be a close game, while South Bromsgrove host Bishop’s Hereford, Thursday’s only game, meanwhile, is also in the Midlands as Princethorpe College and Trent College go head to head.

Over in Wales, meanwhile, Bridgend College and Christ College take each other on. The South East has a busy day on Wednesday, Tiffin are back in action after their triangular with Hampton and Brighton College on Saturday, travelling to Reigate College, while Langley Park head to Simon Langton Grammar.

Dartford Grammar meanwhile host Robert Clack, while King John welcome Southend High and Trinity School Sevenoaks travel over to Oakwood Park Grammar.
