Schools Rugby: Midweek Preview – 7s and 15s in a busy week of school rugby

There is a big week of rugby ahead, with 7s and fifteen-a-side both on the agenda over Wednesday and Thursday.

It is that crossover point in the season where teams begin to shift from the full game to the shortened format, as we saw on our live stream of Sunday’s Seaford Southern 10s, which you can watch below.

On the 7s front on Wednesday there are some cracking looking competitions. Up at Wirral Grammar School they will be hosting Merchant Taylors’, Lancaster RGS, The College of Rugby, and Shrewsbury in a fantastic start to the 7s season for all. Wirral will have both a 1st and 2nd VII in the competition on what ought to be a superb afternoon of 7s.

Further South, Wetherby are hosting Latymer Upper, Radnor House, and Saint Cecilia’s in what promises to be an intense and exciting competition, while at Churcher’s College there is a triangular, they host Gordon’s and Reed’s, with all three having some big tournament coming up over the next few weeks.

In the long format of the game there are still some huge fixtures going on this week, among the biggest being another huge game for Sir Thomas Rich’s, who are in fantastic form at the moment. They host Bishop Wordsworth’s, who won the Bowl at the Seaford Southern 10s on Sunday.

Over in Wales the Cup finalists from the Seaford 10s, Christ College are in action against Newport High, and given their performances on Sunday they will be feeling full of confidence. Travelling from Wales are Rydal Penrhos, they head to Cheadle Hulme, which promises to be a close game.

Staying in the North West, St Anselm’s College host Bishop Heber High, the school that saw the Curry twins ply their trade before moving to Oundle. Meanwhile Manchester Grammar, so good so far this year, are in action at Runshaw while Oswrstry welcome Birkenhead.

The Schools Cup, Plate, Vase, and Bowl semi finals are coming up in about a month, as such teams are starting to get some warm up fixtures in. Sutton Valence and Reading Blue Coat will meet each other in the Schools Vase semi finals and both have warm up fixtures this week against sides that also have semi finals to look forward to.

Sutton Valence will head to Eastbourne College, who are in the Schools Bowl semi finals, while Reading Blue Coat, whose quarter final highlights you can see below, are taking on Henley College. Henley College currently have a Schools Plate semi final against KCS Wimbledon to look forward to.

There is also County Cup Final action on Wednesday as Peter Symonds’ College and Farnborough 6thform College go head to head in the Hampshire County Cup Final, a game that should be a cracking contest.

Elsewhere in the south and south east, Tiffin look to bounce back from a difficult result on Saturday as they welcome Harrodian. Meanwhile Wilmington Grammar host Beth’s Grammar, while Oakwood Park welcome Herne Bay High.

Robert Clack are in action at home to Gravesend Grammar, with Brentwood hosting Sigma College and QES Barnet taking the trip to Haberdashers’. Meanwhile ACS Cobham International host Ibstock Place.

There are some huge games in the Midlands, Warwick, who played in an absolute thriller against Sir Thomas Rich’s on Saturday, are travelling for a huge clash against Bablake & King Henry VIII, who have been superb this season.

Along the road Old Swinford Hospital and KES Stratford go head to head, while Princethorpe College and Kenilworth meet. Meanwhile KES Aston welcome KES Camp Hill, who are having a busy 2022.

Thursday

There is more 7s on Thursday as Byrnaston, Canford and Winchester College take to the field in a triangular at Canford School.

Meanwhile, back on the fifteen-a-side field, there is another County Cup Final as Clarie’s Court and St Bartholomew’s go head to head in a huge occasion.

Elsewhere Beechen Cliff and Sherborne meet, Sherborne looking to test themselves ahead of their Schools Cup semi final against Trinity, and in ACE College Beechen Cliff they have picked a strong opponent. In the north of the country QEGS Wakefield and Trent College go head to head, two sides that are capable of playing some utterly superb rugby.
