School 7s: Middlesex 7s Draw & Preview – Harrow looking to retain 2020 title against a strong field

The 2022 U18 Middlesex 7s draw has been revealed as the tournament returns after 2021 was lost to the pandemic.

Taking place on the 2nd March and hosted by St Benedict’s School in Ealing, the tournament is one of the key staging posts on the way to the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s.

It has been running since 1967 and has seen some of the great school sides pass through the competition, and in recent times Harrow and Hampton have been the dominant forces, winning the last five editions of the competition between them.

In total there are sixteen teams in attendance, they are split into four groups of four and from there the winners of each group will progress to the Cup semi finals. Second place in the groups will compete in the Plate competition, third in the Shield, and fourth place to the Bowl competition.

Hosts St Benedict’s, who last won the competition back in their outstanding 2007 campaign and claimed the Plate in 2019, are in Group A where they are joined by Mill Hill, Shiplake College, who hosted their own excellent sevens tournament at the start of February, and John Fisher, who were the last side other than Harrow or Hampton to win the Middlesex 7s, back in 2014.

Group B contains Hampton, who have won this competition seven times including most recently in 2019. They are joined by the reigning Plate champions, St Paul’s, London Oratory, who won the title back to back in 1989 and 1990, and ACE side Beechen Cliff, the Bath affiliates.

Over in Group C is another ACE side in the form of London Irish affiliates Bishop Wand, plus one of the biggest names in global school rugby, Millfield, who have contributed to the Bath U18 side just as much as Beechen Cliff this year and who went unbeaten through the fifteen-a-side season, including winning the prestigious St Joseph’s Festival. Elsewhere in the group are two sides that had strong fifteen-a-side campaigns, Skinners’, who made a real habit of giant killing, and RGS Guildford.

Group D hosts the reigning champions, Harrow, who also won the title in 2015 and 2016. They will be among the favourites again this but must progress from a tricky group that includes three time champions Tiffin, Wimbledon College, and Harlequins’ ACE side, Gordon’s, who will be strong contenders.

Overall it promises to be a fantastic afternoon at St Benedict’s, and by the end of the day’s play there will be some real lessons learned and knowledge gained at the road to Rosslyn Park ramps up.
