School 7s: Christ College Brecon win superb Colston’s 7s Tournament

Sunday’s Colston’s 7s saw Christ College Brecon build on the potential that they had shown at their own tournament a week ago to claim the title here in Bristol.

The NextGenXV live stream cameras were there to capture the action as the Welsh side stormed through the tournament in superb fashion, and you can relieve it by watching again through the embedded video below!

It was a stunning day of rugby, with the teams continuing to seem incredibly thrilled simply to be out there playing sevens in good conditions. Sixteen teams had gathered in the South West, and each made their mark on the tournament.

Christ College had been placed in Group A, where their opponents were Bristol Grammar, Prior Park College, and Queen’s College Taunton, and came through the group in strong fashion to set up a semi final against Colston’s, who had topped Group B.

Group winners were to head to the Cup semi finals, while second place in the groups went to the Plate, third the Bowl, and fourth to the Trophy.

Hosts Colston’s had reached the semi final against Christ College after some seriously impressive displays in a tough Group B that contained Abingdon, Monkton Combe, and Exeter School.

On the other side of the draw it was a Taunton masterclass as Taunton School topped Group C, impressively holding off Downside, KES Bath, and most impressively Kirkham Grammar School, who also had a side up at the North of England School 7s. That sent them into a semi final against old rivals King’s College Taunton, who headed Group D over QEH, Whitchurch High, and Kingswood – more on the quality of that group later.

That set up a Taunton School v King’s College Taunton semi final, two great rivals going head to head. Expectation was huge, but so rarely is expectation met. However on this occasion it exceeded all expectation as the two teams gave it absolutely everything as they charged for a spot in the final. At the final whistle they could not be separated, 26-26, but no artificial ‘away’ sides here, we went to golden point and it was King’s College that claimed it sending them into the final.

There the run would end though, they faced a Christ College side that were simply sensational. In their semi final Christ College had beaten the hosts, Colston’s, a tricky task with the home support Colston’s could enjoy, and in the final the Welshmen were absolutely on it.

They stormed out to a 21-5 half time lead, and just kept going, finishing up with a sensational 40-10 victory to claim the Colston’s 7s title – a deserved title from a side that have been fantastic all season.

In the other competitions, the Plate, Bowl, and Trophy, it was that tricky Group D that proved the dominant one. King’s College might have missed out in the Cup, but every other team in their group went home with silverware. QEH claimed the Plate, beating Bristol Grammar School 26-10 in the final, while Whitchurch High claimed the Bowl with a defeat of Prior Park College, Kingswood meanwhile secured the Trophy.

In the end though, the lasting memories are of an incredible day at Colston’s, with some fantastic sevens on show, and a wonderful performance from Christ College from the start of the day to the finish.
