School 7s: West of England 7s Draw & Preview

Sunday will see Taunton School host the West of England U18 7s, one of the final chances for sides to prepare for the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s.

Sixteen teams will be gathering in Somerset in total, split across four pools of four, and the competition is set to be unbelievably high with some huge names included in the draw.

The top side from each pool will head to the Cup semi finals, with second heading to the Plate, third to the Bowl, and fourth to the Shield.

The hosts, Taunton School are in Group A and it looks a tricky one, with QEH and Exeter School alongside, plus a Cheltenham College side that has the potential to go a long way.

Group B contains Taunton’s great local rivals, King’s College Taunton, the two of them had one of the great semi finals at last week’s Colston’s 7s (which you can watch again below). King’s reached the final there and will be hoping to go one further here, but they must first get through a tricky pool that contains three other good sides in Blundell’s, Bristol Grammar, and last week’s hosts, Colston’s.

Group C is going to be almost impossible to take your eyes of, featuring two of the very best from the fifteen-a-side season in Clifton College and Millfield, neither has hit their full heights on the 7s field yet, but they surely will at some point and this group could be the touchpaper that sets them off. Joining them are the third of the Taunton sides, Queen’s College Taunton, alongside Bryanston.

Over in Group D are Sherborne who, after missing out in last week’s U18 Schools Cup semi final, will now have their attention on 7s – and what a 7s team they may have. They have a tough group though, with Canford and King’s Bruton capable of some fantastic rugby, while Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf were utterly sensational on their way to the Christ College Brecon 7s title a fortnight ago (which you can see again below). If they are on similar form again, they will be among the favourites here in Somerset on Sunday.
