It was a glorious day in Cumbria on Sunday as the Sedbergh Super 10s kicked off after three long years.

Hosts Sedbergh are the holders, having won the title in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and came out in the sort of form that makes them the red hot favourites to make that four titles on the bounce as they topped their pool ahead of Dulwich College, Hampton, and second placed QEGS Wakefield.

Day 2 sees the top two sides from the Day 1 group head to two Cup groups, with the winners meeting in the final, while the bottom two sides from the Day 1 groups meet in mirroring Plate groups.

Cup Groups

Sedbergh will be joined in an absolutely brutal group by Brighton College, who qualified good and early from Group 3 ahead of a dead rubber against Ipswich, which the Suffolk School won, with both sides already qualified by then. Alongside Brighton College and Sedbergh are Stamford, whose early victory over Felsted gave them great momentum en route to a second place finish in Pool 4.

Completing the group are Seaford College, who had to go to the well to escape Group 2 on Sunday. An early defeat to RGS High Wycombe left them needed perfection from that point on and they managed it in style, first beating Cokethorpe handsomely before beating Barnard Castle 24-14 with a superb performance.

That took them to the Cup thanks to points difference, and left Barnard Castle and RGS High Wycombe waiting on the tournament rules and an errant scorecard before confirmation that as Barnard Castle had won their head to head with RGS High Wycombe, they would be in the Cup Group B.

Alongside them are Kirkham Grammar School, who looked utterly formidable en route to topping Group 4 ahead of Hurstpierpoint College, Felsted, and second placed Stamford. Ipswich headed Group 3, winning that effective dead-rubber against Brighton College 26-24, and are looking superb – following on from a very strong Rosslyn Park campaign.

Rounding off the Group are QEGS Wakefield, who caught Hampton cold early on and then claimed victory over Dulwich College to finish second in Pool 1 behind the outstanding hosts, Sedbergh.

Plate Groups

The Plate competition sees Hampton, who looked so strong after their early setback against QEGS that left themin the Plate, alongside Hurstpierpoint College and KES Bath in Group. As well as RGS High Wycombe, who simply could not have been any closer to the Cup Groups, they must surely be the most unfortunate team in the competition.

Over in Group B It’s King’s Macclesfield, who won their massive game against KES Bath, who line up alongside Cokethorpe, Dulwich College, and a Felsted side that must be considered among the favourites, and who have some firepower to add too.
