South Africa: 5 Teams of the Week

5. Rondebosch

After a Grey High festival in which they themselves will admit they underperformed the boys from Bosch put their setbacks behind them and recorded an emphatic 46 – 24 win over their Southern Suburbs rivals SACS.

There seems to be something brewing at the school, the younger age groups are performing well and the first team who are extremely talented on paper look to be clicking and coming together nicely as a group. First shots fired in the Southern Suburbs league, is this the start of a big season for Bosch?

4. Voortrekker

The Northern Free State derby against Goudveld is one that is much anticipated, two schools with two highly rated coaches and this a fixture that promised fireworks.

Voortrekker continue a highly successful season thus far with a great 32 – 15 win and this away from home. We will continue to watch their season with great interest.

3. Paul Roos

A team with their backs against the wall, numerous injuries and not to mention two losses to Helpmekaar and Affies meant the Stellies youngsters were heavy underdogs for this fixture.

I don’t think any punters saw a victory of this margin against Grey High who were on a run of rich form and a 30 – 14 win for “The Roos” shows that South Africa’s Springbok factory has certainly not lost their status as one of the school rugby giants of South Africa.

2. Garsfontein

What a start to the season it has been for Garsfontein, a highly successful Noord-Suid tournament, an unbeaten start to the season and a historic win. The Pretoria outfit look primed for a huge season!

Beating an in form Affies side 20-19 may not be a shock to many as both are quality outfits, what marks this occasion and makes it so special is that it is their first ever win over their Pretoria rivals and you could just sense how much it meant to the school.

1. Dale College

What a turbulent week it has been for the Qonce outfit. First they lost Lisakhanya Lwana, this truly rocked the school and community at large and the boys were reeling. If that were not enough during their fixture against Port Rex lock Liyabona Teyise was concussed and left the field only to tragically pass away later.

Despite all of this the boys did the business on the field against Port Rex 16-8, is this a result that makes them deserve the number 1 spot? Ladies and gentlemen, this is school rugby. We are a community, all of us one and while losses on the field is a part of building character losses of life are an altogether different story. These kids deserve to enjoy the best years of their life right now, playing the sport their love with their brothers! Death, tragedy and pain are all part of the life experience but at such a young age and for these events to follow each other so closely speaks volumes about the hurt the community must be feeling right now.

Dale has and always will be a school of fighters, despite having their best talent poached by more established schools they have always produced teams willing to fight until the final whistle. Despite all these challenges Dale fights, it’s what they have done from when I was a youngster and it’s something they will continue to do. They deserve their number one spot, and keep an eye on the team and you will see that fighting spirit continue.
