Schools Rugby: Midweek Preview – The Vase Begins

The school season is underway and the fixtures now come flying through thick and fast!

This midweek sees the start of the U18 Schools Vase, although actually is kicked off a touch early with Loughborough Grammar School’s opening round defeat of Ratcliffe College, 29-3.

It is not just the Vase though, there is plenty more to be found elsewhere, with some absolutely fantastic fixtures, and it is with those that we begin our preview.

Tuesday

Downside v Craighouse, Chile (Tour)

Fettes College v Glenalmond College

Sherborne v Bishop Wordsworth’s

Sherborne finished off pre-season well on Saturday with a defeat of Bryanston and a draw with Cranleigh, they will look to continue that into the start of the season proper on Tuesday against a Bishop Wordsworth’s side whose own season is also awaiting it’s start and who will be excited to get underway.

Scotland sees a return to action after the weekend’s cancelations, with Fettes College and Glenalmond College going head to head on Tuesday. Meanwhile back in England Downside welcome Chilean side Craighouse for their latest tour fixture, the Chileans are regular tourists of England and always a popular side to face.

Wednesday

Ewell Castle v Wetherby

Llandovery College v Whitchurch High

Old Swinford Hospital v RGS Worcester

Rendcomb College v Kingham Hill

St Edward’s Cheltenham v Sibford

After the weekend’s action Old Swinford Hopsital v RGS Worcester simply leaps off the page on Wednesday after both had such close fixtures on Saturday. Old Swinford won a thriller at Monmouth 31-29, while RGS Worcester had a thriller themselves, albeit one they lost out in 22-21 against Collegiate. If Wednesday provides even half the drama, we are in for a cracker.

Elsewhere Ewell Castle host Wetherby and Kingham Hill travel to Rendcomb College, with Sibford heading to St Edward’s Cheltenham, but it is in Wales where so many eyes will steer due to two giants going head to head, Llandovery College and Whitchurch High, two of Wales’ most familiar names across the Severn due to their willingness to travel and take on English sides. This one could be spectacular, and plenty of eyes will be on it.

Thursday

Canford v Craighouse, Chile (Tour)

King’s Rochester v Bethany

Loretto v Edinburgh Academy

Milton Abbey v Sexey’s

Thursday sees more action in Scotland as Loretto welcome Edinburgh Academy, two of Scotland’s biggest names going head to head. Craighouse’s South Western tour of England continues on Thursday too, the Chilean side head to Canford for what should be a special occasion.

Meanwhile also in the South West is Milton Abbey versus Sexey’s, while in the South East King’s Rochester will welcome Bethany.
