Live Stream: The Schools Championship – Round 2 | Whitgift v Wellington College

The Schools Championship moves to Round 2 this weekend as Wellington College enter the fray to take on Whitgift.

As Official Media Partners to The Schools Championship, NextGenXV will once again be broadcasting the game live on our YouTube channel, on TikTok, and you will be able to watch it embedded below in this article.

The game kicks off at 2.30pm with Whitgift looking to bounce back after last week’s 46-10 defeat to Sedbergh in the opening game of The Schools Championship (TSC), which saw Sedbergh take the early lead in the table with 4 points thanks to that bonus point victory (points are awarded 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, plus try-scoring and losing bonus points).

Millfield, the fourth of the four teams in this year’s TSC, were also in action last week at Sedbergh, playing a showcase game against Clifton College, who announced that they are planning to join in 2023.

So Wellington College are the last of the four to experience a TSC event, and will be hoping to make their first one an even more special day as they aim to bounce back from defeat last weekend to an exceptionally strong Harrow side, 21-15.

Both sides are absolutely packed with superb players, and that allied to the superb arena that is the 1st XV pitch at Whitgift, and a crowd that is likely to be huge given the relatively short trip from Wellington College to Whitgift, should make for the most outstanding atmosphere.

Games have been fairly tight between these two recently, last season’s fixture saw Wellington College win 24-12, while back in May 2021 the two met in the mini-playing window post-lockdown, where Whitgift claimed the spoils, 26-12.

In many ways that game was a precursor to this, Whitgift, Wellington College, Millfield, and Sedbergh travelled to Esher RFC and to build on the early shoots of an idea similar to TSC, 16 months later and The Schools Championship is entering its second round.

In many ways though The Schools Championship is second fiddle in this one, as this game is played annually in memory of Seb Adeniran-Olule, a former pupil of both schools whose life was tragically cut short a few years ago not long after leaving school. The game is played for a trophy named in his honour, and is one of the most special afternoons in school rugby. To find out more, please visit Seb’s Foundation.

In terms of The Schools Championship, there are four more rounds to go after Saturday’s game, the next one being Millfield’s TSC debut as they travel to Wellington College on the 8th October.

The next games then take place after half term with Millfield hosting Whitgift, Wellington College and Sedbergh meeting at Broadstreet RFC, and Millfield hosting Sedbergh.

There will be no looking ahead on Saturday for these two sides though, who will be entirely focused on Round 2 of The Schools Championship and securing a first victory of the season.
