BECOME A PATRON

As half term approaches, the weekend’s school rugby quietens down a little. However at Ipswich School things still move on as they host their Ipswich School 7s this Sunday.

Ten sides will gather at U18 level at the home of one of the fastest rising school sides in the country for the second edition of the event, though last year’s ended up being cancelled due to the weather conditions.

The ten sides will be split into two groups of five teams each, with the top two in each group qualifying for the Cup semi finals, and third and fourth qualifying for the Plate semi finals.

There is also an U16 tournaments, and a fortnight ago the school held U15 and U14 tournaments. The draws and results for those can be seen here: Ipswich School 7s U16, U15, U14.

In the U18 competition hosts Ipswich will surely be among the favourites despite the fact that a number of key players will be missing as they will be with Northampton Saints, who are pushing for a place in the Premiership Rugby U18 Academy League final this year.

Ipswich are drawn in Group 1 alongside local rivals St Joseph’s College, who would love to do well on rival ground. Alongside those two are Samuel Whitbread Academy, who have played some fantastic rugby this year as they continue to grow and grown. Travelling south to this group are Wisbech Grammar and Worksop College, with Worksop putting in the longest trip of anyone at the tournament.

Group 2 looks fairly heavyweight as well. Bedford School will be a side to watch, though like Ipswich they will be missing some key players to Northampton Saints. Look out also for Felsted, who performed well in the ten-a-side arena at the Seaford 10s and will be eager to get some strong 7s performances under their belts too.

Alongside those two are New Hall, who have had some fantastic sides through the years, as well as Wymondham College, and Norwich School, who can boast England’s Freddie Steward among their recent alumni.

Seven of the ten sides also have teams entered in the 12 team U16 tournament being held on Sunday as well, only Worksop College, Felsted, and Wymondham College do not. Attending the U16s, which is divided into three groups of four, but not the U18s are King’s Ely, Leicester Grammar, Bishop’s Stortford College, Whitgift, and Woodlands.

It should be a superb day at both age-groups, and a fantastic way to begin the half term break!
