Schools Rugby: Midweek Preview | 9th to 12th October

It is Continental Tyres Schools Cup week again, which means another packed midweek of schools rugby action over the next few days.

 

Across the Continental Tyres Schools Cup, Plate, Vase, and Bowl there is action, as well as a return to action in Scotland after the weekend’s deluge, plus bags more action in England including two LIVE game that will be available on the NextGenXV YouTube channel; Rugby v Ipswich, a huge game, and, in the Continental Tyres Schools Cup, and Midlands B regional semi-final, Haileybury v Stamford.

Continental Tyres Schools Cup

 

It’s the regional semi finals stage of the Continental Tyres Schools Cup, and three schools are already through to the finals, St Peter’s York in North A and Marlborough College in South West B both have byes, while last week Radley College won 35-19 at Bloxham to progress to the Midlands A regional final.

 

North A

Woodhouse Grove v Lancaster RGS (Wednesday)

St Peter’s York v Bye

 

Two in form sides meet on Wednesday in a bid to host St Peter’s in the regional final, Woodhouse Grove and Lancaster RGS. Given the way that both are playing, there is every reason to believe that we could be in for a real classic on Wednesday.

 

North B

Barnard Castle v King’s Macclesfield (Wednesday)

QEGS Wakefield v Kirkham Grammar (Wednesday)

 

Both regional semi finals in North B take place on Wednesday and both whet the appetite enormously. Barnard Castle are Cup legends, but host an unbeaten King’s Macclesfield that will fancy a good run in this competition. It’s similar in the other game too as Cup legends QEGS Wakefield host Kirkham Grammar, who are also unbeaten and would love to go one better than their losing final in 2022.

 

Midlands A

Stowe v Berkhamsted (Tuesday)

Bloxham 19-35 Radley College

 

Radley College will look in on Tuesday’s clash with interest as former Plate champions Stowe host former Daily Mail Trophy champions Berkhamsted. The winner will host Radley in the regional final, but first we await a potential classic on Tuesday.

 

Midlands B

Northampton School for Boys v Bromsgrove (Wednesday 18th)

Haileybury v Stamford (Tuesday) – LIVE on NextGenXV

 

Haileybury and Stamford meet LIVE on Tuesday in a repeat of their game at StoneX a couple of weeks ago, won narrowly by Stamford. No action in London & South East A this week, Ipswich v Dulwich College is yet to have a date announced, while The Judd and Epsom College meet next Wednesday.

 

London & South East B

Harrow v RGS Guildford (Tuesday)

Hampton v Hurstpierpoint College (Wednesday 18th)

 

Harrow are looking unstoppable this season and would dearly love to progress deep into this competition, on Tuesday they will meet a strong RGS Guildford side that would love to spring a surprise. The winner will then have a week to find out their opponent, Hampton and Hurstpierpoint College meet a week on Wednesday in an intriguing clash.

 

South West A

Blundell’s v Taunton (Wednesday)

Kingswood v Monmouth (Tuesday)

 

Kingswood have been sensational this year, on Tuesday they host Welsh giants Monmouth, who are always great in this competition. The victors there will then be watching events in Devon on Wednesday when last year’s semi finalists, Blundell’s, host Taunton.

 

South West B

Bishop Wordsworth’s v RGS High Wycombe (Wednesday)

Marlborough College v Bye

 

Marlborough College await the winners of Wednesday’s game between Bishop Wordsworth’s and RGS High Wycombe, two sides that know their way to Twickenham all too well. RGS have been sensational this year, but Bishop Wordsworth’s is no easy place to go.

 

Continental Tyres Schools Plate

 

The Continental Tyres Schools Plate, for sides knocked out in Round 1 of the Cup, kicks off this week and kicks off at the regional semi final stage, though there are not too many fixtures this week.

 

North A sees RGS Newcastle and Cheadle Hulme meet on Wednesday for the chance to host Stonyhurst in the Regional Final, likewise in North B it’s Stockport Grammar v Liverpool College on. Wednesday for the chance to face Grammar School at Leeds in the Regional Final.

 

In Midlands A Uppingham and Warwick leave it until after half term, with a bye in the regional final the winner knows they will be straight into the national quarter final stage. Midlands B is a different story as Bedford host last year’s Cup champions Oakham on Wednesday, the winner will head to either Solihull or Sir Thomas Rich’s, who are yet to announce their date.

 

London & South East A is all taking place after half term, with Campion being the only side not from Croydon in the draw. They host John Fisher while Whitgift host last year’s Cup finalists and the 2022 champions, Trinity. Over in the B section, KCS Wimbledon head to New Hall on Tuesday, the winner will face either Newman College or St Benedict’s next, they are yet to annocune their date.

 

South West A sees King’s College Taunton and Sherborne go head to head on Wednesday, the winners hosts either Bristol Grammar or Collegiate, who do not meet until after half term. Finally in South West B the action is rounded off with Abingdon hosting Canford on Thursday, the winner hosts Caterham in the regional final, who have a bye.

Tuesday

 

Tuesday’s action sees another LIVE game at 4pm as Rugby School host Ipswich in the latest of their Bicentenary fixtures. It should be an incredible occasion as the founders of the game welcome one of the strongest sides in the country. There are a couple of Bowl games on Tuesday as Wymondham College host Framlingham College and KES Lichfield travel to Princethorpe College, meanwhile outside of the Bowl, Woodbridge host Farlingaye, St Felix host Langley, and Rickmansworth travel to Parmiter’s.

 

There is a return to action in Scotland too as the outstanding George Watson’s College host Marr College and Gordonstoun travel to Morrison’s Academy.

Wednesday

 

Vase fixtures dominate the Wednesday fixture list, and in the north east Durham v Harrogate Grammar looks like a huge one. Indeed the Northern sections are bursting with good fixtures as St Ambrose College host Lymm High and St Anselm’s College host Scarisbrick Hall particularly. Also in the north, AKS Lytham welcome Runshaw College and Dame Allan’s travel to Scarborough College, and look out for Bradford Grammar’s trip to Manchester Grammar, that could be a great game.

 

Another standout is in the South East, where local rivals St George’s Weybridge and Reed’s go head to head. Not too far away St John’s Leatherhead are hosting St Andrews, while on the South Coast there is a cracker, Lord Wandsworth College head to KES Southampton. Kent meanwhile sees Eastbourne College travel to Gravesend Grammar, and Ravens Wood head to Dunottar.

 

North London sees the impressive Mill Hill in action at UCS, while Watford Grammar welcome Haberdashers’ Elstree. Meanwhile in Hertfordshire the outstanding St Albans, a dark horse for the title perhaps, are at St George’s Harpenden.

 

Over in Reading there is a bit of a derby as Reading Blue Coat host Aylesbury Grammar, while in Oxford St Edward’s are hosting Aylesbury Grammar. Elsewhere, Newcastle-Under-Lyme travel to Wrekin, while there is a big game at King’s Worcester as they host KES Birmingham, and in the south west Wellington School host QEH.

 

Over in the Bowl the action keeps on coming, Yarm v Pocklington should be a good game, likewise Calday Grange Grammar v Merchant Taylors’, and Nottingham High v Birkdale. Hereford Cathedral School are hosting KES Five Ways, while Sir Henry Floyd will hope to progress at home to King Alfred’s, meanwhile Portsmouth Grammar’s next challenge is on the road at Brockenhurst College.

 

London Oratory travel to Saint Cecilia’s, while a buoyant Sutton Valence welcome Cranbrook, Maidstone Grammar host Ashford, and Brentwood welcome Southend High. City of London Freemen’s meanwhile host Christ’s Hospital.

 

Outside of the English knockouts, there is action in Scotland, Dollar Academy and Glenalmond College go head to head, while Glasgow High host St Columba’s and Hutchesons’ Grammar head to Kelvinside Academy.

 

In the north of England Ashville Harrogate and Hymers College meet, while Ripley St Thomas host QES Kirkby Lonsdale.

 

Staffordshire sees one of the games of the day as Denstone College host Hartpury College Bulls, that one is not to be missed. Indeed the midlands has a few of those games, St Joseph’s College host Henley College and Samuel Whitbread Academy welcome Newman College, all three massive games that are going to be well worth paying attention too.

 

Elsewhere, Hereford 6th form College are in action at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar, with KES Aston hosting Camp Hill.

 

In Oxfordshire Cokethorpe mett Suffolk’s Finborough, while Burford host Farmor’s, Reading meanwhile sees Holyport at Reading School, with Berkshire’s Reddam House hosting LVS Ascot and Buckinghamshire’s Sir William Borlases’s hosting Lord Williams’.

 

In London the impressive Hayes host Colfe’s, while in Kent Wilmington Grammar host Beth’s Grammar, Oakwood Park Grammar host Bennett Memorial, and Trinity Sevenoaks head to Canterbury Academy.

 

Surrey meanwhile sees George Abbot take on Howard of Effingham, while Claremont host Wilson’s, Lingfield College meanwhile head to take on Caterham’s 2nd XV and Glyn’s 2nd XV host Ewell Castle. Further South Salesian welcome St James and Ryde host Queen Mary’s College, while there is a derby in Bournemouth as Bournemouth School host Bournemouth Collegiate.

 

It is all go in Gloucestershire too as Balcarras host Chipping Campden, Rendcombe College host Bredon, and Cheltenham Bournside host Cleeve, while St Edward’s Cheltenham are at Sibford.

Thursday

 

Thursday has some great action. In the Vase the outstanding Dauntsey’s are on the road at Monkton Combe, while in Essex RGS Colchester host an impressive Gresham’s side. Nottingham meanwhile sees Trent College host Hill House.

 

Over in the Bowl, Richard Hale are in action at Bishop’s Stortford College, that will be worth watching, so too Amplefroth College’s trip to Prince Henry’s Grammar.

 

Outside of the knockouts, Cranleigh’s trip to Hurstpierpoint College jumps off the page, both are playing some fantastic rugby this year and it should be a classic.

 

So too does Radley College v Eton College, a great schools rugby fixture as Radley look to bounce back from defeat to Tonbridge against an unbeaten Eton College side that is eyeing up an unbeaten first half of term.

 

In the South West King’s Burton and Bryanston go head to head, likewise Sexey’s travel to Milton Abbey, while Sidcot welcome Sherborne’s 4th XV, whose 2nd XV are also in action against a 1st XV, they travel to Clayesmore.

 

The South East sees Kent College travel to Chatham & Clarendon, while Worth and Christ’s Hospital go head to head. Scotland meanwhile has a classic fixture as Fettes College head to Loretto.
