Schools Rugby: Weekend Preview | 19th and 20th January

After a midweek that was heavily affected by the weather, schools rugby is back this weekend in what should be slightly more playable temperatures.

All three formats of the game will be in action this weekend, with fifteen-a-side, ten-a-side, and seven-a-side rugby all taking place.

Friday

The action begins on Friday with some fantastic fixtures, not least at Lymm RFC where Sedbergh’s U17s will take on a combined Bablake and King Henry VIII side. Bablake and King Henry’s merged through covid before separating again shortly after, but the two come together for this special classic clash against one of the giants of the global school game.

In the Midlands Solihull and KES Camp Hill meet at Bournville RFC in what should be a fantastic game of rugby. Meanwhile Samuel Whitbread and St Joseph’s College go head to head. St Joseph’s are in brilliant form and will be eager to continue that, but Samuel Whitbread have been ticking along nicely too, it should be a superb game.

Friday Fixtures

Samuel Whitbread Academy v St Joseph’s College

Sedbergh U17 v Bablake & King Henry VIII U18 – at Lymm RFC

Solihull v KES Camp Hill – at Bournville RFC

Saturday

Saturday is set to be an amazing day, not least in the North East where Durham will host their annual 10s tournament where those in attendance will include North East rivals Barnard Castle, Dame Allan’s, and RGS Newcastle, as well as Yorkshire sides such as Ampleforth College, Bradford Grammar, and St Peter’s York.

The North West is also busy, with plenty of fifteen-a-side action, one that looks particularly exciting being Stonyhurst v Mount St Mary’s College, who are in brilliant form. Along the road Manchester Grammar and Lancaster RGS go head to head, while Crossley Heath host Altrincham Grammar and Scarisbrick Hall head to Birkenhead. Meanwhile at U17 level St Anselm’s College and Wirral Grammar meet in what should be a strong game.

Scotland is, as ever, packed with fixtures this weekend. One that stands out is a repeat of the Cup Final as George Watson’s College and Stewart’s Melville meet. Watson’s won that final 42-21 and will head in with huge confidence – nobody have beaten them this year – but Stewart’s Melville are going to be keen to get their own back.

Elsewhere, Dollar Academy host Glasgow High School, while Glasgow Academy host St Columba’s, meanwhile Hutchesons’ Grammar and George Heriot’s go head to head. Morrison’s Academy, who have had some great performances, welcome St Aloysius’ College, while Edinburgh Academy head to St Leonards.

Back in England there are some fantastic occasions, not least in Hertfordshire where Haileybury will host a 7s triangular with Haberdashers’ Elstree and The Perse the visitors. There is also fifteen-a-side action in Hertfordshire, with St George’s Harpenden hosting St Benedict’s, a game that should be a great one for spectators.

There are some crackers in London. NextGenXV League and Daily Mail Trophy champions Harrow host Mill Hill. They played last term with Harrow winning narrowly, but a number of players in Academy League action, this superb Harrow side will have to be at their sharpest against a dangerous Mill Hill outfit. It will be a similar situation for Whitgift, who host Northampton School for Boys. Whitgift beat NSB last term but will have a number of players in action for Harlequins this weekend so will have to be on their game if they are to repeat that feat.

Meanwhile in Kent Chislehurst & Sidcup host a Campion side that gave Brighton College a good game last time out, while The Cedars travel to Sir Joseph Williamson’s.

One of the games of the weekend will be at Warwick, where they host RGS High Wycombe, who were absolutely brilliant at times last term. It really should be an outstanding game of rugby. Over in Stratford, KES Stratford welcome Loughborough Grammar, while right on the West of the country Haberdashers’ Adamshost Shrewsbury.

Gloucestershire sees a cracker as well, with Sir Thomas Rich’s hosting RGS Worcester, two sides that will be missing a few players but that should still put on a wonderful display.
