Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf claimed the Christ College Brecon 7s title on Sunday, for the second time in three years, after a fantastic day’s play.
The Welsh side topped their pool ahead of eventual finalists Blundell’s, before defeating the side that pipped them to the Welsh Schools and Colleges Cup in December, Llandovery College, in a thrilling semi final, 21-19.
That set up the final between Glantaf and Blundell’s, who beat Group A table-toppers Millfield 19-12 in their semi final, and it was a final that whet the appetite of all as the two had played out an epic group game that had only gone Glantaf’s way by virtue of an extra conversion, 14-12. In the final though the Welsh side had more left in the tank and a strong performance gave them a 24-7 victory at their hands back on the Christ College Brecon 7s Cup.
Over in the Plate the title was shared between Hartpury College and Whitchurch High, who drew 5-5 in the final. A late change to the format meant the Plate was contested by two second placed sides from the pools and the two best third placed sides – with it being 3 pools the Cup had the three pool winners and the best runner up, meanwhile the Bowl was to be contested by the remaining third placed side and the three fourth placed sides. It was a testament to Whitchurch then, and the strength of Pool C that was headed by Glantaf and Blundell’s, that they reached the Plate final as a third placed side.
The Bowl meanwhile saw the hosts, Christ College, claim the silverware, a year on from winning the main title for the first time this century. They had finished fourth in Pool A behind Millfield, Hartpury College, and Brentwood, but were flying in the knockout, winning 33-12 over Dean Close and then 29-7 against Coleg Sir Gar to lift the Bowl.
Ultimately though, the day belonged to Glantaf. Their second title will feel just as sweet as the first in 2022 and, given that all four sides in their group reached finals, they know they had to do it the hard way. Not least in their semi final against a Llandovery College side that has been all-conquering in Welsh Schools rugby this year. Glantaf are a side to keep an eye on this 7s season.
