South Africa: 10 to Watch (20 April, 2024)

  1. Wynberg vs Grey High

Wynberg have been on fire this season and are currently unbeaten having dispatched winelands giants Paarl Boys last weekend thanks to our player of the week star flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed.

Grey High on the other hand are coming off a shock loss to Dale and will go into the game as under dogs. But never bet against the Grey boys, we have seen many a shock this season could this be yet another?

  1. Michaelhouse vs Northwood

Michaelhouse looked poised to be the team to beat in the KZN region pre-season with any punters in the area confident this was to be their year. While some of their results certainly have been impressive a shock loss to St Johns from Zimbabwe meant a need to go back to the drawing board.

Northwood have not played much rugby this season but a win over Hilton and a draw against a highly rated DHS outfit mean they are no slouches and are arguably the dark horse in the Eastern region this year. Could a win at House be the catalyst to a dream season?

  1. Helpmekaar vs Monument

Two schools who by their own high standards have not yet reached peak standard but on paper there is a ton of talent. This is going to be a bruising encounter with both teams having size in the forward pack and this is where the battle is going to be won or lost.

If you are looking for a bruising encounter then look no further than this fixture.

  1. Maritzburg vs DHS

One of the most intense rivalries in the nation, there is never love lost when Maritzburg College take on their Durban rivals and this year is no exception. DHS and Martizburg have both made tremendous strides in their rugby development over the years and one needs not only be excited about the first team game but the lower age groups should be extremely competitive as well.

Who will have bragging rights this year?

  1. Waterkloof vs Menlopark

A Pretoria derby is always a clash one looks forward to. This match in particular looks exciting as both teams seem evenly matched with Menlopark much improved on last year.

Kloofies will be confident having dispatched previously unbeaten EG Jansen over the weekend although they had to endure a tremendous comeback, will that have taken its toll on the boys?

  1. Queens vs Dale

Another massive derby that dates back over 100 years, Queens would have been extremely confident pre-season with this years group having been far and away the strongest team in the Eastern Cape.

Dale have been all over the place, losing to Cambridge seemed as if the program had reached its lowest point and then a win over in form Grey High and all of a sudden there seems to be renewed confidence in Qonce.

Expect passion both on and off the field, and running rugby at its best.

  1. Rondebosch vs SACS

Another big derby and there are few things as exciting as a Southern Suburbs derby. In previous years you would bet the house on Bosch but this SACS team are different from previous years and there is certainly strength in depth this year that they have perhaps lacked in the past.

Bosch were in fine form until their shock loss to Milnerton sent them tumbling down the rankings, but never write them off. This will certainly be an epic clash across all age groups.

  1. Affies vs Jeppe

Would it be considered at upset if Jeppe beat Affies? Ask me a month ago the answer would be yes, ask me today and the answer would certainly be no. This years Jeppe outfit are history makers, nobody saw their win against Grey College coming and that would have no doubt built up confidence that the team can take anyone on.

That being said this Affies team is extremely unlucky to have lost to Paul Roos and Paarl Gim, the foundations were there for a win and had luck gone their way there is no doubt they would be sitting atop our rankings right now.

Expect passion and leaving it all on the field, if Jeppe can nullify that Affies pack of forwards and their backs have space, anything can happen.

  1. Paul Roos vs Paarl Boys

A winelands dream derby, who doesn’t love seeing these two giants of schools rugby take to the field? Paarl Boys looked to be in devastating form before their shock loss to Wynberg. Paul Roos have quietly gone about their business, this years Roos team is the best we have seen since 2018 and go into the game as favourites but in a winelands derby anything can happen.

  1. Paarl Gim vs Grey College

It has finally happened! We have a Grey College vs Paarl Gim interschools and schools rugby fans across the land will finally get to see two of the form programs over the last decade go head to head across all age groups.

Gim are an exceptionally well drilled outfit, relying on solid foundations of team work with every player expecting to press the opposition. Grey have individual brilliance on their side, players who have the ability to turn a game on its head at any moment.

Some epic one on one battles await, at age group level there are some great matches waiting in the wings as well. This is going to be a special occasion and a match nobody will want to miss.

To predict a winner would be a toss of the coin, but may rugby be the ultimate winner.
