RFU ACE Boys League: Round 3 Preview | 4 sides look to continue unbeaten start

The RFU ACE Boys League enters the third round this week, with the ACE Girls League having a week off before resuming on the 2nd October.

Across the ACE Boys League only four sides have won their opening two games, Gosforth Academy and Stourport High School in the North, and Gordon’s and Beechen Cliff in the South.

All four have a chance to extend those unbeaten starts this week, as do the four sides seeking a first victory, Myserscough College, Moulton College, Truro College, and Newman College.

RFU ACE Boys League Round 3 Fixtures: Wednesday 25th September

North

Brooksby Melton College v Gosforth Academy

City of Oxford College v Oaklands College

Moulton College v Bishop Burton College

Stourport High v Myerscough College

Gosforth Academy’s unbeaten opening start has come in back to back home games, on Wednesday they travel for the first time this season, heading to Brooksby Melton College, who lost narrowly to Stourport in Round 1 before a magnificent victory at Bishop Burton last time out. It should be a close game, and a huge one in the overall shape of the table.

If Myerscough College are to get a first victory of the season, they will have to do so the hard way as they travel to the unbeaten Stourport High School, who are enjoying their best start to an ACE season. There is plenty riding on it for both sides, which always makes for a good encounter.

Bishop Burton College got off to a good start in round one but were stung by Brooksby Melton last time around, they now hit the road to take on new entrants Moulton College. Moulton have lost their first two games and have found the going tough, but those were on the road, this is their home debut since re-joining the ACE League and you can be sure that they are going to be inspired by that. Bishop Burton will need to be fully on it.

Oaklands College are one of the sides to have stung Moulton, they were sensational last week but they have a big challenge this week, travelling to City of Oxford College, who might have lost out at Stourport last time out but they gave them a good run for their money. Victory for either has them looking up the table, defeat leaves them looking for a quick response.

South

Beechen Cliff v Truro College

Exeter College v Gordon’s

Hartpury College v SGS College

Newman College v Bishop Wand

Beechen Cliff might lie second in the table owing to not getting a bonus point in one of their victories, but that victory was a 17-7 victory over Hartpury College in round one. They are the side to watch at the moment. They look to make it three from three on Wednesday when they host Truro College, who are without a win. Without a win perhaps, but they came within a whisker last time out, earning two losing bonus points when Exeter College scored in the final play to beat them last week. They are going to be more determined than ever on Wednesday.

Exeter College meanwhile look to go back to back on Wednesday when they host Gordon’s, however the Surrey side sit top of the table after impressive victories over first Newman College, then Bishop Wand. Those were local games though, this is a big away trip and a different sort of test, one to watch for sure.

As expected, Hartpury College rallied last week with a superb performance at Newman College. They will be determined to keep the pedal to floor now that they are up and running, and they will need to as their visitors on Wednesday, SGS College, were superb in their opener against Exeter College. Then slipped last week against Beechen Cliff, but if they can recreate their Exeter form, they will cause problems.

New boys Newman College will meanwhile be searching for their first victory on Wednesday when they host Bishop Wand. Bishop Wand started with a bang against Truro College, and were impressive in defeat against Gordon’s last week. They will be determined to bounce back and are going to be a challenge for their hosts, but Newman College are made of stern stuff, it should be a good game.
