The first weekend of October is always a big one, gone is the early season feel of September, we are into the core of the 2024/25 schools rugby season now.
Into the core, and into some massive games this weekend too, there are some fantastic fixtures, big rivalries, and plenty of history. Unbeaten records will fall, others will have morale boosting performances, and with prestigious tournaments like the 38th St Joseph’s Festival looming, which will be live again here on NextGenXV, this is the time in the season where statements can be made.
This weekend sees a couple of live games, and a couple of brilliant ones at that. Friday night sees the conclusion of Merchant Taylors’ Phab Charity Rugby Week when they host Reading Blue Coat, a game that always seems to bring plenty of late drama. That one kicks off at 6.30pm on Friday evening and will be live from 6.15pm on the NextGenXV YouTube Channel, TikTok Channel, and through the embedded video below.
Then on Saturday comes one of the greatest schools rugby fixtures on the planet as Wellington College host Millfield in a 2.30pm kick off on Bigside. Between their pair of them they could put together an XV of old boys that would compete pretty handily against just about any side in world rugby, and that quality can always been seen on the field when these two meet. Like Friday’s game, this one always seems to produce the drama. Join us from 2.15pm on Saturday, as ever live on the NextGenXV YouTube Channel, TikTok Channel, and through the embedded video below.
They are far from the only games though, there is an abundance of quality right across the board this weekend. Picking out just ten fixtures for our Ten to Watch was a challenge. Indeed every week it is, as we have seen throughout this season every single game has the capacity to be an utter classic.
Ten to Watch
We do begin though, as ever, with our Ten to Watch, and there should be plenty of fireworks within it as some of the season’s early front-runners go head to head. It won’t be a weekend to miss!
AKS Lytham v QEGS Wakefield – Saturday
A really exciting fixture, two sides with a huge amount of schools rugby history behind them, both unbeaten and in truly brilliant form, and both named in last week’s Top 5 School Teams of the Weekend. It’s mouthwatering. AKS have the home advantage and will be keen to make good use of it – it’s their first home game in a little while and given their success in recent weeks they will be desperate to get out there in front of buoyant home support. QEGS won’t be too bothered though, they are used to big games in big environment. They are used to toppling sides in form too, beating Durham and Grammar School at Leeds last week. They will be hoping that a slightly more challenging fixture list offsets the home advantage. Whether it will or not remains to be seen, what is certain is that we are in for a cracker.
Berkhamsted v Northampton School for Boys
This is a cracker of a game, Berkhamsted started the season in fine form with victories over Warwick and Bromsgrove – hard fought victories too. NSB are also unbeaten, and flying, with victories over Ipswich, King’s Macclesfield, and The Perse, and they have been largely dominant across those. One record will fall, for NSB this ought to be their toughest game so far, but Berkhamsted have been without a game for a couple of weeks – how will that impact this one. What it sets up for is a tantalising clash between two sides that have achieved some remarkable things in the last few years. It should be a cracker. You can catch Berkhamsted LIVE on NextGenXV on Wednesday 9th October when they host Kirkham Grammar School at StoneX.
Bromsgrove v Monmouth – Saturday
This is going to be a very interesting game. Bromsgrove started the season fantastically well, with a hard earned victory over their great rivals Warwick before dominant displays against Bishop Vesey’s and Sir Thomas Rich’s. Since then though their form has slipped, tight losses to Berkhamsted and Oakham sandwiching a Cup defeat to those same old rivals, Warwick. They will want to turn around that slide and return to their early season form. The challenge is a big one though, Monmouth School are in brilliant form under new coach Richie Rees, unbeaten with four victories from four and into the third round of the Cup. The only disappointment for them so far is that their annual Border Shield clash with Malvern College had to be postponed. On the surface then, advantage Monmouth, however they have a common opponent in Sir Thomas Rich’s, Bromsgrove swept past them, Monmouth won but had a much tighter game. This game then, could swing any way.
Cranleigh v Brighton College – Saturday
One of the biggest games of the weekend, perhaps of the season so far. One keen observer noted that this will pit two of the best backlines in the country against each other, a recipe for a fun. Cranleigh arrive as one of the form teams in the country, unbeaten with impressive victories over big name opponents. They are in top form. It has been two weeks since their last game though, where they were tested more so than by anyone else by Seaford College. Brighton College will bring that sort of challenge too, the character shown to almost snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in their season opener against Tonbridge has set them up for a fantastic run of form, they are undefeated since and playing irrepressible rugby. Much like they are Cranleigh’s biggest challenge so far though, Cranleigh are theirs, which is what makes this one just so exciting.
Eastbourne College v Hurstpierpoint College
This year Eastbourne College are celebrating 125 years of rugby, and the celebrations have been going well. They kicked the season off by giving a very good Judd side a good game, and have gone undefeated since with three wins from three including in their special 125th event against City of London Freemen’s. Hurstpierpoint College are their biggest challenge since The Judd though. The Sussex side haven’t hit the heights of last year just yet, with the form swinging up and down, but they have the capacity for brilliance – as shown in their three victories and such Seaford College so close. They will be eager to show their best on Saturday in what is likely to be a massive occasion.
Harrow v Warwick – Saturday
Another massive game this Saturday, Harrow have been involved in some cracking games against Clifton College and Wellington College and come out just on the wrong side of the result, but they have also had some fantastic victories and in midweek progressed through to the third round of the Continental Tyres Schools Cup with victory over Mill Hill as they look to go back to back in that tournament and join the pantheon of tournament legends. Warwick meanwhile had a tricky start to the season with three defeats on the spin, however they have completely turned that on its head in recent weeks with three victories on the bounce, including a 22-11 victory over their great rivals Bromsgrove in the Cup, in which they are already in that pantheon of legends. It makes for a fascinating game on Saturday, Harrow are a wonderful side but Warwick are starting to look very handy themselves. It will be excellent viewing for those lucky enough to be on the sidelines.
Merchant Taylors’ v Reading Blue Coat – Friday – LIVE on NextGenXV, 6.30pm KO
Always a great game to end the Phab Charity Rugby Week at Merchant Taylors’, Reading Blue Coat won a couple at the death in 2021 and 2022 but Merchant Taylors’ got their own back last year. Expect more drama this year! You can see a full preview of this game here: Merchant Taylors’ v Reading Blue Coat Preview.
Radley College v Tonbridge – Saturday
Two very good teams. When Radley College opened their season with a 17-20 defeat to Epsom College it made everyone sit up and take notice. By then Epsom were already flying and yet Radley had nearly toppled them, they must be a good side. Dominant back to back victories since then have confirmed that, but now they face their biggest challenge since Epsom, Tonbridge. The Kent side are unbeaten with four from four, including tight victories over Brighton College and The Judd, they are right in the upper echelons. Both have played St Paul’s and had strong performances, Tonbridge’s victory margin being slightly larger may suggest a slight advantage their way, but so slim is it that’s it is surely offset by Radley’s home advantage. A brilliant game that is going to be right in the balance.
Seaford College v Epsom College – Saturday
A massive game. As mentioned, Epsom College are looking like one of the best sides around at the moment, unbeaten with a played five won five record and they have been almost unchallenged in four of those five. When they were, vs Radley, they still came through. Seaford College will be their biggest challenge since that Radley game, the Petworth side have really pushed themselves with their fixture list this year and will be ready for this. Their record stands at even in the win/loss column at the moment, but that doesn’t tell the whole story – they pushed Cranleigh harder than anyone else has managed this season, and they will feel they can do the same or better against Epsom College. It’s a huge challenge for both sides, a different challenge for both sides. How they both fare will tell us a lot about both.
Wellington College v Millfield – Saturday – LIVE on NextGenXV, 2.30pm
One of the great games in the world between two of the greats of schools rugby, both in fantastic form. Saturday’s game is mouth-watering in any scenario, but after three incredibly close and tense games between these two in a row, it’s gone up a notch. You can see our full preview of the game here: Wellington College v Millfield Preview.
Friday 4th October
Friday has some massive games, and among them is the return of the West Anglia Schools League as Bishop’s Stortford High School host The Perse. It is the third game in the league, which also contains Bedford Modern, Merchant Taylors’, St Albans, and St George’s Harpenden, and in the opening two Merchant Taylors’ and St Albans earned victory. Those two, incidentally, meet next weekend. It’s a first outing in the league for Bishop’s Stortford and The Perse and they will be eager to hit the ground running, it should be a cracking fixture.
It is a big day of action on Friday, one of the key games will be Abingdon v RGS High Wycombe. RGS have started the season well and will be gearing up for the St Joseph’s Festival in a couple of weeks, where they will hope to go one better than last year’s runners up spot. Abingdon are a tricky customer though, they are a good side that always seems to play their best in these big games, so expect a blockbuster one on Friday.
Expect some fireworks from Kirkham Grammar School, who were the side to beat RGS in that St Joseph’s final last year. They take on Finborough, who are going to be throwing everything at this one after a tough outing last week and perhaps aim to catch Kirkham cold – Kirkham haven’t had a game for a little bit. It’s a challenge though, Kirkham are playing some of the best rugby in the country at the moment, and you’ll be able to see them in action live here on NextGenXV on Wednesday when they face Berkhamsted.
Stamford are another side that is in utterly sublime form. Unbeaten and playing like a Top 10 side in the country, it has been very impressive. Friday seems them take on Grammar School at Leeds, who have had some excellent performances themselves this year. This will likely be their biggest challenge yet, such has been the quality of Stamford, but GSAL love a big game and they don’t come much bigger than a Friday night game. One to watch.
One of the top sides in Yorkshire this year has been, once again, Woodhouse Grove. They have won all but one of their games and will hope to bring that form to a massive game on Friday night against Harrogate Grammar School, who have put together some terrific teams in the last couple of years. It will be a cracking occasion, and the rugby will doubtless be superb.
The north of England is pretty packed with big Friday fixtures, Scarisbrick Hall have been excellent this year and will be eager for another big performance in a showcase game against a strong Giggleswick side. Giggleswick will be up for it, knowing how good Scarisbrick have been, which should make for a top game. Meanwhile The Grange and Calday Grange Grammar go head to head on Friday as well, with both looking to use this big occasion as a springboard for a strong October.
Cobham RFC will play host to one of the biggest games on Friday as KCS Wimbledon, who so dramatically won their derby last weekend, take on Mill Hill, whose only defeat of the season has been to the outstanding Harrow. It’s a huge game between two excellent sides. One that is not to be missed for sure, and at a great location – Cobham RFC is a superb venue.
Another fantastic venue is Plymouth Albion RFC and that’s where Plymouth College will take on Truro School on Friday evening. It’s a massive Devon/Cornwall derby, one that both sides will lace plenty of passion and excitement on top of. Expect a big crowd, and more than a few interested eyes in Exeter Chiefs stash in the stands. A fantastic game, and a huge occasion for both.
One team that absolutely loves a Friday night game is St Peter’s Gloucester, if a Friday is doable, they will do it, which is absolutely fantastic. Last week they met The Crypt on a Friday and edged a classic, this week they take on the unbeaten King’s Worcester. St Peter’s will have to be at their best because King’s Worcester are off to one of their best starts in over a decade and will be eyeing up this Friday fixture as a huge occasion in which they want to perform. They are right, it will be a huge occasion, and should be a cracking game.

Saturday 5th October
After a couple of weeks with mildly reduced fixture lists due to exeats and leave weekends, plus some truly awful weather, this Saturday is absolutely heaving with games and heaving with top quality games as well.
In the South West one of the biggest will be Cheltenham College against Blundell’s, Cheltenham are quietly having and absolutely outstanding season but Blundell’s will pose a challenge to them. It should be a fantastic game. While Blundell’s travel from Devon, back in Devon Mount Kelly and Exeter School go head to head in what should be a good match up. As should, back in Gloucestershire, Dean Close v Sir Thomas Rich’s, two teams that have had some outstanding sides in recent years and that will be keen to put in a big performance against a local rival on Saturday. Meanwhile The Crypt look to bounce back from last week’s narrow defeat with a big game against a good KES Stratford side, and Hereford Cathedral School make the trip to take on a busy Westonbirt side.
Bristol sees the outstanding KES Bath back in action as they look to continue their incredible start to the year, it’s a tough away trip for them though, taking on Collegiate, one of the biggest names in school rugby and a side playing some excellent stuff as well. St Edward’s Oxford are meanwhile also on the road in the Bristol area, they have a tricky fixture against a Clifton College 2nd XV that has been consistently performing at 1stXV level this season, only highlighting the depth of quality at Clifton. Neighbours Clifton High School meanwhile have a strong fixture against Rendcomb College.
Over in Somerset, meanwhile, there is a triangular at King’s Bruton, and it ought to be a really competitive one as well, with Downside and Wells Cathedral the visitors. Kingswood look to bounce back from that tough outing against Clifton College (see highlights below) with a big performance on Saturday, they take on a good Malvern College side.
Along the road, Monkton Combe welcome Wycliffe College, a game that should be a well-matched contest.King’s College Taunton meanwhile host Wellington School, two sides capable of excellent performances. King’s great rivals Taunton School are also in action, they are on the road in Dorset to take on Sherborne, who have been putting in some excellent displays this year.
As have Dauntsey’s, perhaps one of the surprise packages of the season. They will be looking for another impressive performances against one of the former greats of the school game, Bryanston, who themselves have had some good displays. Clayesmore are also on the road and looking for a strong performance as they travel to Warminster, while Canford look to arrest a little slide in momentum when they travel to take on Bishop Wordsworth’s – that one should be a fantastic game.
Over in Hampshire, Portsmouth Grammar School welcome Ryde for what is usually a fantastic game of rugby. Lord Wandsworth College meanwhile welcome The Oratory, who will be keen for a big performance with some big games on the horizon, including their derby with London Oratory in a few weeks, live on NextGenXV.
Surrey is, as ever, full of good fixtures. Travelling up from Hampshire at KES Southampton as they take on a Gordon’s XV, KES have been fantastic in the early stages of the season, but just lost a touch of momentum recently so will be keen to quickly rebuild it. One of the biggest games in the area will be RGS Guildford v St Paul’s, St Paul’s have found the going tough against the very best, but have also had some strong performances and they will be eager for another on Saturday, RGS meanwhile have had some terrific outings and would love to make a statement against a big name this weekend.
St George’s Weybridge and Reigate Grammar meet in a big game on Saturday, it promises to be a good contest. Likewise St George’s great rivals Reed’s, who travel to St John’s Leatherhead. St John’s had a draw last week that just checked some tricky momentum, so they will be eager to get this one underway at home, though Reed’s are going to be incredibly determined themselves. Caterham meanwhile welcome London’s Emanuel for a game that is usually an excellent contest.
Across in Kent it’s another busy day, Sevenoaks, who had that draw with St John’s last week, are at home against Christ’s Hospital, a big fixture for both. Sutton Valence were brilliant last week and will want more of the same away at a Dunottar side in good form after a knockout victory in midweek over St Lawrence College, who will look to quickly bounce back at home to Cranbrook.
Worth are in stunning form at the moment, unbeaten and scoring tries for fun. They have a big away trip this week to take on King’s Canterbury, who would love to stop the Worth momentum. It will take something special though, this Worth side is absolutely flying. Also in good form last week were Skinners’, they are on the road at Dartford Grammar, meanwhile The Judd’s rise can be seen through that fact that it will be a 2ndXV hosting Brentwood’s 1st XV, who will be determined to make a point a come home with the spoils. Elsewhere, Maidstone Grammar host Sir Joseph Williamson’s, and St Olave’s Grammar are on the road at King’s Rochester.
In London, Whitgift and Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar meet in their annual block, one of the longstanding fixtures for both and a great fixture. Whitgift’s local rivals John Fisher meanwhile look to bounce back from derby defeat as they host Langley Park and aim to inject real momentum ahead of the John Fisher State Schools Festival, which will be live here on NextGenXV in a couple of weeks. Not too far away, Eltham College host Colfe’s, which should be a good game, meanwhile Wallington County Grammar are on the road at Claremont Fan Court.
South West London sees Wimbledon College look to bounce back from derby day heartbreak with a big game against Tiffin, who are playing some good stuff. Meanwhile Fulham Boys are at home to Gunnersburyand London Oratory host Windsor Boys’, with The Cedars at City of London Freemen’s.
One of the great traditions on the calendar is the annual trip to Cardinal Vaughan, in the shadows of Allianz (Twickenham), for East Anglia’s Wisbech Grammar, it should be a great occasion. Over in East Anglia there are some great fixtures as Gresham’s host Royal Hospital School in a cracking Norfolk/Suffolk derby, while Norwich head down for a massive game against Felsted, two sides really looking to make their mark. Wymondham College are also heading south, taking on RGS Colchester, and New Hall host Coopers’ Coborn.
The Leys, who have quietly had some excellent performances, are at home against Hertfordshire’s Bishop’s Stortford College. Across in Hertfordshire there is a massive game as Campion travel out from London to take on St Albans, two teams that are looking very strong and that have had some outstanding players in recent times. Also fitting that bill are Richard Hale, who will be eager to continue their good form in a big home game against QES Barnet.
Also travelling out of London are Dulwich College, they head to Bedford for one of the oldest school fixtures around. They will travel in good spirits as well after putting in an outstanding performance in defeat to Wellington College last week. Bedford will be determined though as they look to return to the sort of form that saw them defeat Rugby so well in early September.
To the west, one of the biggest games this weekend is Eton College v Marlborough College, neither is in quite the form they would want but both will be eyeing this one up as a game in which they could make a big statement. Pangbourne College are also in action, hosting a big game against Churcher’s College, who have some excellent players in their ranks.
Meanwhile Aylesbury Grammar host Latymer Upper and Shiplake College welcome UCS, Aylesbury and Shiplake will both be live on NextGenXV in a couple of weeks in a massive game. Just outside of Banbury, Bloxham host Magdalen College, a big game for both sides, who have each had some strong performances this year.
The Midlands is, as ever, a hotbed for big fixtures. Stowe have been really excellent this year but face a tricky task with an away trip to Rugby, who are going to be determined for a massive performance on Old Bigside after a tricky few weeks of action. Another side that is flying is Uppingham, the Rutland side beat old rivals Oundle in midweek to progress in the Cup and they will be eager to keep the momentum rolling on the Leicester again this Saturday when they host a good Bedford Modern side. Oundle themselves, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back quickly and they have a huge game on Saturday, welcoming Haileybury, who have experienced a bit of everything this year.
Out to the West, Old Swinford Hospital welcome Solihull for what is a massive game for both sides, while in Shropshire Haberdashers’ Adams host Ellesmere College. Further North, one of the biggest games of the day will be St Anselm’s College’s trip to St Ambrose College, both were utterly sensational last week and will arrive absolutely bursting with confidence. Nearby, Altrincham Grammar School host Crossley Heath, while Manchester Grammar welcome a Kirkham Grammar School 2nd XV that is playing like a top level 1stXV at the moment.
On the Wirral, Birkenhead host St Mary’s College, while Wirral Grammar host Cheadle Hulme in a key game, Wirral were involved in a stunner last week against Stockport Grammar, who this week travel to Lymm High in Cheshire. Along the road from there, Wilmslow High host Sandbach.
Further North, Bolton host Liverpool College, an historic fixture in the area, while Hutton Grammar School will welcome Merchant Taylors’ Crosby for a massive game.
Dropping South East to Lincolnshire, Worksop College host Nottingham High School, who are looking to bounce back quickly from derby defeat last week. In Derbyshire, two in form sides go head to head at Mount St Mary’s College host Stonyhurst. Both are playing excellent rugby, so much so that Mount St Mary’s were in last week’s Top 5 School teams of the weekend, and that should make for a cracker on Saturday.
Up in Yorkshire there are huge games, perhaps none more so than Sedbergh’s trip to St Peter’s York, two legends of school rugby. St Peter’s are playing brilliantly, only the unbeaten QEGS have got the better of them and even then, only by a point. Sedbergh are looking like one of the best teams in the country though, unbeaten and in scintillating form. They will arrive as favourites, but St Peter’s will be no pushovers and would love a famous victory.
Another massive game in Yorkshire sees an in form Durham side head to take on Ampleforth College, who are having one of their best starts to a campaign in years. Durham might be favourites, but Ampleforth will be feeling good and will give them a test. Elsewhere, Pocklington have had some good results and would love another, they travel to Bradford Grammar who are looking for a big performance. Hymers College would like one too, they host Trent College, who will be bouncing after their derby victory last week. Silcoates meanwhile welcome Austin Friars down from the very North West of England.
In the very North East, Barnard Castle are in action in a massive game against Lancaster RGS, two grand old rugby giants. Barnard Castle will be keen for real momentum heading into next week’s Merchiston Castle Festival, which will be live here on NextGenXV, as will Dame Allan’s, who welcome Sedbergh’s 2nd XV on Saturday for what should be a cracking game.
Speaking of the Merchiston Festival, two sides go head to head in Scotland that will both be in attendance, hosts Merchiston Castle and visitors Stewart’s Melville, as massive game between two giants. Another pair of big names going head to head are Dollar Academy and Fettes College, while Edinburgh Academy are hosting North Berwick High.
Merchiston’s rivals for the side playing the best rugby in Scotland at the moment are George Watson’s College, who have been sensational this year. They have a huge game too, hosting Strathallan, who will be at the St Joseph’s Festival in a couple of weeks time, also live here on NextGenXV in a three day celebration of rugby.
Elsewhere, Robert Gordon’s College welcome Loretto north, and in St Andrew’s, St Leonards host Linlithgow Academy. Over in Glasgow and its surrounds, St Aloysius’ College host Glasgow High, while Hutcheson’s Grammar host Marr College.
