The final handful of fixtures of 2024 have taken place, with four confirmed results from the week as schools head into the Christmas break.
A few fixtures were cancelled or postponed, with a couple still to be confirmed, but there were four impressive results and games over Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tuesday saw Hayes round off a strong season in superb style with a quite brilliant performance as they defeated Glyn School by a hugely impressive 49-0 margin. Not the finish Glyn wanted, but they were up against a side that has been outstanding.
Wednesday then saw the last three games of the term. Sir Thomas Rich’s made our Top 5 School Teams of the Weekend for their performance on Saturday against Northampton School for Boys. They had another huge game on Wednesday at St Peter’s, Gloucester, but St Peter’s matched them brilliant. It was a superb game that went right down to the wire, both teams had their chances, but it was St Peter’s that finished up on top. In the end a game for both sides to be proud of, each giving everything of themselves to the cause.
Hill House have been a star team of the 2024 term, particularly in the first half of the season where they caught many unawares. They showed that brilliance once again on Wednesday in the final game of the campaign, hosting a good King’s Grantham side but giving up little for a 31-14 victory. A superb finish for Hill House, and a performance for King’s to finish on with their heads held high – few have been able to compete so well with Hill House.
Hereford 6th form College finished off the year in stunning fashion, travelling to KES Camp Hill and performing brilliantly for a 45-5 victory. They have been involved in some huge games this year, Hereford, not least the Apple Cup, but Wednesday’s victory will rank high in the memories of their term’s work.
With that, the term’s rugby is over, with the inaugural NextGenXV also concluding on Wednesday – read more about that here: NextGenXV Global Schools Challenge Review.
It has been a wonderful term of rugby, one of the closest and most competitive in years. At every level it has felt as though anyone can beat anyone, and that’s exactly how it should be.
The quality has been excellent, but more important are the memories, and there have been some wonderful ones. From last minute victories and defeats, to shared moments on the field between opposing sides – who could forget Millfield and Hampton joining together at the end of their game at the St Joseph’s Festival.
Those are the moments that live long, the long coach journeys, the overnight stays, the hard days training in the cold, the laughter, the jokes, even the tears.
There’s plenty more to come, 7s season looks set to be one to remember, but for those whose journey ends here, thanks for the memories – stay in touch.
