School 7s: Birkenhead School U18 & U16 7s | Draw & Preview

This Wednesday Birkenhead School host their annual 7s tournament, in what is a busy 7s week for the school.

On Sunday they are also one of the three venues for the North of England U18 Schools 7s, the others being St Anselm’s College, and Birkenhead Park FC, from which NextGenXV will be broadcasting live all day through the NextGenXV YouTube Channel and through the embedded video below.

On Wednesday though the Wirral will be all about Birkenhead School, and this year they have added another layer to their tournament, introducing an U16s competition as well.

Unlike in previous years, the U18 competition will be a ten-team tournament rather than a sixteen-team tournament, with the ten sides split into two groups of five teams each. Winners of each group will meet in the final, while second in Group 1 will face second in Group 2, and so on.

The U16 tournament will run along the same format, the only difference being that Scarisbrick Hall and King William’s College are in the U16 tournament instead of AKS Lytham and Bolton, who only have a sides in the U18 tournament.

Four of the sides competing will be back in action on Sunday, Manchester Grammar, Stonyhurst, and Wirral Grammar School, alongside the hosts, Birkenhead.

Birkenhead are in Group 1 in the U18s alongside AKS Lytham, Bolton, Merchant Taylors’, and St Mary’s College, while in Group 2 Manchester Grammar, Stonyhurst, and Wirral Grammar are joined by Calday Grange Grammar and the 2023 Plate winners, Stockport Grammar.

Over in the U16s, Birkenhead are again in Group 1, with Stonyhurst, Stockport Grammar, and Calday Grammar joining them, along with King William’s College. Group 2 contains Manchester Grammar, Merchant Taylors’, St Mary’s College, and Wirral Grammar, alongside Scarisbrick Hall.

It should be a fantastic competition, and a great precursor to Sunday’s North of England U18 School 7s.
