JEPPE 37 KES 28
In a game that lived up to its fierce rivalry billing, Jeppe s travelled to ESl and left with bragging rights and a 37-28 win in the first of their annual King Price Derby Series matches.
The star of the day? Kuhle Shitlhangu. The openside flanker turned the game on its head, not only with relentless breakdown pressure and dominant tackling, but also with two tries, including a game-ending, length-of-the-field stunner after charging down an attempted drop goal on the hooter.
Flyhalf Nehemia Hollenbach was equally composed, slotting six crucial kicks (3 conversions and 3 penalties). Jeppe’s forward pack laid a strong foundation with Glodi Tshipamba bullying the lineouts and Lethabo Mashao electrifying from the wing. KES showed their trademark grit, with Indi Mbonsiswa contributing 13 points and scrumhalf Regan McGurk impressing with tenacity and leadership.
GREY COLLEGE 47 MONUMENT 8
It was a day to forget for Monument, as Grey College put on a clinic in Krugersdorp, running in nine tries en route to a dominant 47-8 win. The famed Grey backline was relentless, but it was their forward power and structure that broke Monnas’ resistance early.
Sherwin Buys and Tristan Maree each bagged a brace, with Toriq Schambreel, Ethan Adams, and Lamla Mgedezi joining the scoring party. AJ Booysen and Steven Muller bossed the physical exchanges, while flyhalf Jan-Hendrik van der Linden controlled the game with poise.
Monnas never backed down, Ryno van der Westhuizen scored a late consolation but they were outclassed from start to finish by a Grey side operating at full throttle.
WATERKLOOF 26 HTS MIDDELBURG 22
In a nail-biter in Middelburg, Waterkloof edged HTS Middelburg 26-22. It was the boot and brilliance of captain Ronan Bastiaanse that made the difference.
With five minutes left, and his side trailing, Bastiaanse dived over for the winning try, adding to his tally of three conversions and cementing his place as the Klofies’ hero. Tighthead Phillip Mans and lock Heinrich Naudé led a spirited comeback after Middelburg dominated early proceedings.
The hosts were impressive, especially through Jacques Greyling and Tercuis Bezuidenhout, but couldn’t close out the match as Klofies showed championship mettle.
EG JANSEN 43 BEN VORSTER 25
EG Jansen unleashed an attacking masterclass to blow past Ben Vorster with a commanding 43-25 victory. Right wing Jaydon du Preez was unplayable on the day, bagging a sensational hat-trick and burning defenders with speed and precision.
The backline clicked beautifully, with Deshean Pietersen, Christopher Combrink, and Jacques van Tonder all crossing the whitewash. Ziain Uekermann kept the scoreboard ticking with four successful conversions.
Ben Vorster had bright moments, especially through Ruben Pohl and Joshua van der Mescht, but couldn’t contain Jansen’s red-hot momentum.
