Day 1 was truly one of the great days of the Sedbergh 10s, with some stunning results, brilliant upsets, and groups that became tense beyond belief, with calculators at the ready as the day headed to a conclusion.
In Group 1 Sedbergh School topped the pool with outstanding performances against Barnard Castle, Hurstpierpoint College, and Seaford College, while those three all beat each other to turn the race for the second spot in the Cup into a real battle. It came down to points difference and a late intercept for Seaford College’s Will Richardson, who only came into the squad at the last minute, earned him hero status at the school as he dotted down at the death against Sedbergh to send Seaford through by the most slender of margins.
Over in Group 2, RGS High Wycombe were outstanding. The back to back St Joseph’s Festival finalists, and Continental Tyres Schools Cup semi finalists beat Stamford, KES Bath, and King’s Macclesfield, but as in Group A those three all beat each other. They key was Stamford’s 31-0 victory over the Howden Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s Vase champions KES Bath, which sent them through on points difference.
Group 3 was a belter, the key result being a fantastic 15-12 victory for Hampton over the 2022 and 2023 champions Kirkham Grammar School. That set the cat among the pigeons in the group, and with victory over Cokethorpe, it was enough to send them through – despite defeat to Dulwich College in the final game. Dulwich missed out due to a 21-0 defeat to Cokethorpe, a wonderful moment for them that really set the competition alight. Kirkham Grammar School’s victories over them and Dulwich though was enough to send them through alongside Hampton.
Over in Group 4, Brighton College secured Cup qualification early after victories over Ipswich and QEGS Wakefield, though the side crowned Howden Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s champions on Friday did drop a game at the end to Felsted, once qualification was secured. Felsted were unlucky, that victory and a draw with Ipswich meant they had the highest points total of anyone that did not qualify for the Cup. QEGS were the other side to qualify, with victories over Ipswich and Felsted, the Continental Tyres U18 Schools Cup finalists quietly have put themselves in a very strong position.
It means that tomorrow sees Sedbergh, RGS High Wycombe, Kirkham Grammar School, and QEGS Wakefield are all in the same Cup group tomorrow – a group for the ages!
Over in Group B are Hampton, Seaford College, Stamford, and the double-chasing Brighton College, setting up the possibility of a repeat of last year’s Sedbergh v Brighton College final, though the other six sides will have a huge amount to say about that.
Over in the Plate, Group A sees Hurstpierpoint College, Dulwich College, and Ipswich up against Rosslyn Park Vase champions KES Bath, while in Group B Cokethorpe, Felsted, King’s Macclesfield, and Barnard Castle are all grouped together.
