Prem Rugby Next Gen: Round 3 Review | Bath go top

Round 3 of the Prem Rugby Next Gen League saw the table shaken up over two fantastic days of action across Saturday and Sunday.

For the first time the league had a fixture in the schools half term break, following two rounds of action back in August. It was the first game where everyone had their internationals available after the August fixtures meant that most were not available due to the England U18 tour of South Africa.

Four sides went into the weekend unbeaten, Bath, Gloucester, Newcastle Red Bulls, and Saracens. Saracens had a bye, meaning they kept that unbeaten record, though results around them meant a slip from 2nd in the table to 7th by the end of the weekend.

Bath’s record remained in place, they were outstanding at home to Bristol Bears at Chippenham RFC, winning 31-5 to rise from third in the table to the top. The only blemish on the record of the 2024 champions being a draw with Saracens in Round 1.

Newcastle Red Bulls made it two from two on Sunday, a good 26-19 bonus point victory over Harlequins that sees them rise from 7th to 5th, within three points of top spot in the table.

Gloucester, however, tasted defeat for the first time as Exeter Chiefs hosted them at Exeter College and put in a fabulous performance for a 27-14 victory that propels Exeter above Gloucester and into third place in the table.

Leicester Tigers, meanwhile, rose up to second after an excellent performance at Denstone College against Yorkshire Academy, winning 31-10 to move them within one point of top spot.

Northampton Saints were also victorious on Saturday in what was the most jaw-dropping game of the weekend, they shared a staggering 107 points with Sale Sharks, winning 67-40 in a frantic afternoon. It moves Saints, the reigning champions, from 8th to 6th, and evoked memories of that stunning opening game of the season where they beat Exeter 64-51. If you want entertainment, head to Northampton Saints!

The league now take a break for a couple of months, returning on the 3rd January for Round 4. From there it’s a blast to the finishing post with 7 rounds in 8 weeks ahead of Finals Day on the 21st February.
