The penultimate round of league action in the Prem Rugby Next Gen League lived up to expectation, with three sides heading into the final round with a chance of meeting Bath in the Final in a fortnight’s time.
Finals Day sees top face second in the final, third play fourth, fifth play sixth, and so on, with every game broadcast LIVE by NextGenLive on the Prem Rugby YouTube Channel.
Bath had already sealed their place in a remarkable third final in a row last week, but they cemented their top seed status in their final league game of the campaign on Saturday, heading to Shelford RFC to face the side that beat them in last year’s final, Northampton Saints. It was a fantastic game and Saints gave it their all, but Bath had too much as they sealed a 33-24 victory that means they go through the league campaign without defeat. Credit to Saints, though, a late rally earning them a try-scoring bonus.
Perhaps the most crucial game of the round was at Dings Crusaders on Saturday evening when Bristol Bears hosted Saracens. Both were in the hunt to join Bath in the final, but a positive result was utterly crucial to Bristol’s chances, while Saracens, who started the day in second place, could seal a place in the final with victory. That victory was elusive though, a brilliant performance from Bristol Bears earning them a 36-24 victory that sees them leapfrog their opponents, moving from fourth place to third, with Quins rising to second after their victory on Sunday. It means the battle for a place in the final comes down to the final weekend, Quins are in the driving seat but have played all their games, so victories for Saracens and Bristol Bears will see them overtake the South West London side. Saracens, perhaps, have the advantage, being at home against Newcastle Red Bulls, while Bristol, unbeaten since Christmas, head to the home of the champions, Northampton Saints. A blockbuster final round awaits.
Exeter Chiefs played their final game of the campaign and secured a top half finish with a fantastic 33-15 victory over Leicester Tigers, keeping them in 5th place, where they will remain through to finals day. For Tigers it was another tough outing, making next week’s game against Gloucester a crucial one for both – both could yet rise as high as 6th.
Perhaps the story of the day though was a first victory of the campaign for Yorkshire Academy, who welcomed Newcastle Red Bulls to Keighley RUFC. It was a terrific performance from Yorkshire, earning their just reward for some good work this campaign for a 33-12 victory. They remain at the foot of the table but very much with a sense of pride in a fantastic performance. It’s a result that will sting for Newcastle, who now head to Saracens for their final game with an eye on a 6th place finish.
The action concluded on Sunday at Preston Grasshoppers, when Sale Sharks welcomed Harlequins. Quins got off to a rapid start, leading 28-7 at the half and extending that early in the second half. A long delay perhaps just caught them out a little though as this excellent Sale Sharks side came storming back, but Quins showed the class that has taken them to second in the table, adding more to their tally in style, and sealing a 49-19 victory. It puts them into second place outright, having completed their 8 games. They have done all they can to land a place in the final, now they sit and watch next weekend’s action and hope that Northampton and Newcastle do them a favour against Bristol and Saracens respectively. For Sale Sharks a home game against Yorkshire remains and they can still finish as high as 6th, something they will be determined to achieve.
It’s all set to be a blockbuster final weekend of action in the Prem Rugby Next Gen league next weekend, with that remaining place in the final very much wide open.
