Prem Rugby Next Gen: Round 9 Review | Bristol Bears seal place in final after thrilling weekend of action

Bristol Bears sealed their place alongside their great rivals Bath Rugby in the 2026 Prem Rugby Next Gen final with a thrilling away victory at Northampton Saints on Saturday.

Saturday and Sunday were the final two days of Prem Rugby Next Gen league action and there was still plenty to play for across the board. Now all eleven sides, plus an England Counties U18 side, head to Kingsholm Stadium on Sunday for finals day, where Bath and Bristol will meet in the final, Saracens and Harlequins will play for third, Exeter Chiefs and last year’s champions Northampton Saints for 5th, host side Gloucester and Sale Sharks for 8th, Newcastle Red Bulls and Leicester Tigers for 9th, and Yorkshire Academy will play the England Counties side.

Bath had booked their place in the final a fortnight ago, and had already played their final fixture last week, so they had the luxury over the weekend of watching the drama unfold of who would meet them in the final.

Harlequins, Saracens, and Bristol Bears all had a realistic chance. Quins had also played their final game, but they started the weekend in second place, knowing that if Bristol and Saracens slipped up then they would be in the final.

Bristol Bears were a point clear of Saracens, so they knew that if the sides matched victorious results then they would be in the final, however they had the challenge of an away game against the reigning champions, Northampton Saints, while Saracens were on home turf, where they are undefeated.

As it turned out, both sides did all that they could. Saracens were magnificent en route to a thrilling 53-29 victory over Newcastle Red Bulls, keeping that unbeaten home record intact and earning a bonus point victory. However Bristol Bears matched it with a breathtaking 47-24 victory at Northampton Saints, Bristol have been unstoppable since the league restarted after Christmas, and it was a performance that deserved a place in the final.

It’s a third in a row for Bath, who were champions in 2024, while Bristol Bears have also been crowned relatively recently, in 2022. A derby game in the final, reasonably close to both sides, it should be a cracker.

For Saracens it’s a third place play-off, and a derby game there as they face Harlequins, who finished up in fourth when the weekend’s play finished. Reigning champs Northampton Saints meanwhile finished in 6th and will face Exeter Chiefs, who, like Quins and Bath, sat this round out. They will play for 5th place overall after Exeter finished there in the table.

Saturday’s other game was an absolute thriller at the finals day venue, Kingsholm, as Gloucester hosted Leicester Tigers. Both have struggled for form of late but put in a display that will be remembered for some time as Gloucester won 45-31. It sent Gloucester rocketing up to 7th in the table, just a point behind Saints, while Tigers, despite the try-scoring bonus, were left in 10th place in the league standings.

The table was finalised on Sunday in one of the best games of the campaign as Sale Sharks hosted Yorkshire Academy at Chester RUFC. Yorkshire picked up their first victory of the campaign against Newcastle last time out, while Sale were itching to get back to winning ways after a tough game against Harlequins last time out. The two sides gave it everything in a stunning contest. They could hardly be separated, but in the end it was back to back victories for the Yorkshire side, who just edged it 38-35. The two bonus points in defeat kept Sale Sharks in 8th though, meaning that they will face Gloucester in the 7th place game on Sunday, while a second victory for Yorkshire was not quite enough to lift them from the foot of the table, they will face England Counties, while Newcastle Red Bulls and Leicester Tigers will meet to play for 9th.
