This Sunday sees Collegiate School host the annual Collegiate School 7s, a joint Rugby 7s and Netball tournament. Mixed hockey also returns for the second season, although that competition does not reach our cameras. Two live-streams will run simultaneously, one on pitch one, and one on court 1, covering the Netball and Rugby!

Since 2013, the Collegiate 7s has been hotly contested by some of the best sides from Bristol and beyond, and there are certainly some big local rivalries across the groups this season. Let’s start with Pool A, which includes the defending champions Kingswood of Bath, former champions Christ College Brecon, Modus Cup winners RGS Worcester, and Downside School, who love this tournament. Kingswood will be faverioutes to top it, having had such great success in last year’s edition, and having another strong season. RGS will put up a good fight, having ended their season on such a high note, and they have a talented backline. Fly-half Will Sutherland represented the English Counties XV on finals day and will be flanked by an awful lot of pace. Christ College have not been able to represent the kind of form they brought across the border since their triumph in 2022, and Downside have made finals before at this competition, but will be cursing the strength of this group.
Group B is a very interesting group, which includes Abingdon, who have never had a better chance to win a tournament in Bristol. After a fantastic, undefeated home season, they backed it up with a plate final win at the Seaford 10s. They have been handed a winnable group, having already beaten the likes of Canford this campaign. QEH made it to the plate semi-final at the BGS 7s a few weeks ago, but were beaten by the hosts at that stage. Prior Park are abit of an unknown quantity at this stage of the season, and will enjoy the opportunity in what is probably the most open group in the tournament. Canford did not have the tournament they would have wanted to at Seaford, but have as much experience of the reduced game as anyone at Collegiate this Sunday.
Group C is a group of immense quality. The hosts, Collegiate, made the semi-final at the BGS 7s a few weeks ago and were narrowly beaten by a very talented Taunton School side. They will be very confident on home soil; however, they have not made things easy for themselves. Monmouth and Monkton Combe are both impressive outfits, but it is Sherborne who might cause the home side the most problems. The blue and gold are full of self-confidence, if anything, but have won the tournament, even if it was over ten years ago. The likes of Jem Lye and Alistair Darko are built for 7s, as physical but very fast forwards. When the hosts face Sherborne in the final group game of the day, Live at 12:10, expect it to be the group decider.
Group D is also a quality group, with former champions Dean Close representing one of four very evenly talented teams. They won perhaps the greatest ever final, beating group-mates KES Bath via golden point after a miraculous comeback. KES therefore have precedent in this event, as well as one of the best play-makers in the West Country in Cade Comer, who grabbed an assist moments after coming on for Bath in the Next Gen Prem final. King’s College will be desperate to match the achievements of their great rivals, Taunton School, who made a cup final in Bristol just a few weeks ago, while BGS made the plate final at the very same tournament, which they of course hosted. It will be a delightful group to unpack!
With only one spot in the cup semi-finals available per group, it will be another thrilling tournament, with quality in every final, three of which make it onto the live-stream!

The netball tournament at Collegiate, being one of the first outdoor tournaments of the season, is always unpredictable as the transition from indoor courts to the harsher grainer surface is sure to knock a few good sides off their paces. However, as this tournament continues to grow, now expanded to an unprecedented 16 teams, there is so much quality amongst the 4 groups.
In Group A, the hosts Collegiate have set up a Bristol Derby with local side Badmington, while 2023 champions Dean Close also compete alongside Monkton Combe. Group B also has a huge fixture lined up between Kings College, Taunton, and local rivals Taunton School. The hosts are certainly pulling no punches when it comes to early ties in the tournament. Taunton School were also champions 2 seasons ago, but will have to contest a spot in the semi-finals of the cup alongside Sherborne and Prior Park. Group C includes Kings Gloucester, QEH, KES Bath and Canford, representing the biggest geographical spread of any group, while Group D includes the defending champions RGS Worcester, who are building towards their own Modus Cup in a few weeks time, and may well be faverioutes in the tournament. Alongside them in the group lie BGS, who hosted their own tournament just a few weeks ago, CCB and Kingswood of Bath
Just like rugby, only the number one side in the group can make the cup semi-finals. With three separate former champions spread out across the groups, in this tournament’s 4th edition, will we see new champions or will one of the previous winners become the first ever team to win the tournament twice, joining Kirkham Grammar School as the only other side across the rugby, Netball or hockey to achieve such a feat?
