FNB Varsity Cup 2026: Round 7 Review & Team of the Round

Eagles Pull Off Miracle Comeback as the Semi-Final Four is Set

The final round of the 2026 FNB Varsity Cup league phase delivered drama that even the scriptwriters would have rejected as too far-fetched. NWU Eagles came from 20-39 down to beat UCT Ikeys 56-53 in one of the greatest comebacks in tournament history, securing a home semifinal and ending the defending champions’ title defence in the process. UP-Tuks confirmed top spot with a clinical 51-22 dismantling of UJ, Maties sealed third with a comfortable 45-23 win over CUT that also confirmed the Ixias’ relegation, and Emeris signed off their debut season with a thumping 41-19 victory over the Shimlas.

The Round in Numbers

  • 46 tries scored across four matches
  • 310 total points
  • 109 points in the NWU vs UCT thriller alone
  • 19 point deficit overturned by NWU in the second half
  • 0 wins all season for CUT – relegated to the Varsity Shield

NWU Eagles 56 – 53 UCT Ikeys

The match of the season. UCT were breathtaking in the first half, running in tries at will to build a commanding 39-20 lead at the break. The Ikeys looked certain to claim a home semifinal and end the Eagles’ season in the process. Then NWU flipped the script. A try within sixty seconds of the restart sparked belief, and from there the Eagles matched UCT score for score in a second half played at an insane tempo. Logan Janeke crossed twice, Jordan McLoughlin and Zack Serfontein added to the tally, and then MJ Mostert powered over twice in the closing stages – the second sealed by a conversion that sent the Fanie du Toit into meltdown. 56-53. Home semifinal secured. UCT’s title defence is over. Stunning.

POTM: MJ Mostert (NWU Eagles)

UP-Tuks 51 – 22 UJ

Tuks were clinical from start to finish. UJ struck first through Tholithemba Sibisi and led 8-0, but from there it was all Pretoria. Christiaan Volk and Jacques Oberholzer both crossed with point-of-origin tries, Dennis Obi added another, and Akhona Kunene barged over as Tuks took a 32-15 lead into the break. The second half was more measured – Akha Mjawule darted over from the bench before Dillon Smith and Munashe Dukuswa added late scores. Divan Du Toit earned another POTM for pulling the strings throughout. Tuks finish top and will host a semifinal. UJ still advance in fourth.

POTM: Divan Du Toit (UP-Tuks)

Maties 45 – 23 CUT

CJ Erasmus was the story. The hooker completed a hat-trick from the maul as Maties powered past the Ixias to confirm their semifinal spot. CUT actually levelled the scores early through Malekela Malothane and Devinto Vergotine before a penalty try and a brilliant point-of-origin score from Louis Fourie gave Maties a 26-15 halftime lead. Erasmus then took over – two second-half maul tries that were virtually identical in their execution. For CUT, the defeat confirms relegation to the Varsity Shield after a winless campaign. POTM went to CUT’s Tsebano Stemer in recognition of a gutsy individual performance in a difficult season.

POTM: Tsebano Stemer (CUT)

Emeris 41 – 19 UFS Shimlas

Emeris saved their best for last. Edward Sigauke bookended the match with two stunning tries – the second a try-of-the-season contender, chasing down a massive kick from deep and stepping the last defender to score. Jacques Marais powered over from a lineout, Jayden Fortuin showed beautiful footwork, and Meno Barnard crashed over from a successful powerplay tap. The Comets scored seven tries and never let the Shimlas settle. For a team that won just twice all season, this was a performance full of pride. They’ll head into the Varsity Shield next season with real momentum.

POTM: Jacques Marais (Emeris)
