Schools Rugby: Midweek Roundup | Continental Tyres Schools Cup and Vase Round 1

It has been a busy week of schools rugby action with the opening round of the U18 Continental Tyres Schools Cup taking place, as well as the Vase.

 

As such, the fixture list was dominated by the game in those competitions, though there were a handful outside of it, and there are now some tantalising fixtures in the second round in a fortnight’s time.

 

U18 Continental Tyres Schools Cup Results 9th to 12th September:

 

North A

Manchester Grammar 22-19 Stockport Grammar (Wednesday)

King’s Macclesfield 55-10 Altrincham Grammar (Wednesday)

St Ambrose College 30-14 Sandbach (Wednesday)

Ellesmere College 59-0 Cheadle Hulme (Wednesday)

St Anselm’s College 34-40 Stonyhurst (Wednesday)

A tight victory for Manchester Grammar sees them into the second round, where they will host a King’s Macclesfield side that were outstanding against Altrincham on Wednesday. Meanwhile St Ambrose Collegewere also victorious and now host Ellesmere College, who were brilliant.

Stonyhurst won a classic at St Anselm’s, winning by six points in a 40-34 stunner. They now host AKS Lytham who were in sparkling form against Wirral Grammar. Twice Kirkham Grammar have been to the final in this competition and twice they have fallen just short, heartbreakingly to Harrow last time around. They are among the favourites again this year and started with a bang at Merchant Taylors’, they now host Scarisbrick Hall, whose strong start to the year continued with victory at home to Lancaster RGS.

North B

Hill House and Woodhouse Grove go head to head in Round 2 after stunning performances in Round 1 on Wednesday. Grammar School at Leeds are also through after a good victory over Ermysted’s, they face either QEGS Wakefied or Hymers College.

Harrogate Grammar also progress after an away win at Scarborough, in form St Peter’s York will be the round 2 opponents after a brilliant 69-25 victory on Wednesday. Barnard Castle meanwhile were outstanding against RGS Newcastle, the Cup giants progress to host either Durham or Newcastle School for Boys.

A 49-3 victory for Stamford on Wednesday means a trip to either Trent College or 3 time champions Oakham next time around. Oakham’s great rivals Uppingham meanwhile are through after a terrific performance on Tuesday, they will face either Oundle or Rugby in a huge game.

King’s Worcester were on song at a good Hereford 6th form College side on Wednesday and will now host Solihull, who also won away from home, beating Malvern 24-6 on Tuesday. Former champions Bromsgrovewere sensational on Wednesday and will now travel to either the former finalists, Old Swinford Hospital, or three time champions and local rivals Warwick.

Midlands B

Samuel Whitbread Academy 22-42 Stowe (Tuesday)

St Joseph’s College came through arguably the game of the round against local rivals, and last year’s quarter finalists, Ipswich. A thrilling 40-33 means they will take on another local rival next round, New Hall, who were victorious at Royal Hospital School. The other game in that half of the draw will see either Colchester RGS or Felsted host Gresham’s or Finborough.

The Perse were away victors at Bishop’s Stortford High and now host either Northampton School for Boys or Wellingborough, while former Plate winners Stowe had a good victory at former Vase winners Samuel Whitbread to set up a Round 2 fixture at home to either Bloxham or Bedford.

London & South East A

Epsom College were sensational against local rivals St John’s on Tuesday and now host Caterham, who defeated Reed’s. Meanwhile KCS Wimbledon were on song against St Benedict’s and now travel to either Hampton or local rivals Wimbledon College.

Haileybury will travel to either Campion or Brentwood after a hard earned victory over reigning Bowl champions Richard Half, while reigning Cup champions Harrow began their defence in style on Tuesday, beating St George’s 67-5 to set up a trip to Mill Hill, who defeated Watford Grammar.

A Croydon derby awaits in London & South East B after John Fisher won at Wallington and Trinity defeated Skinners’, meanwhile 3-time winners Dulwich College were sensational at Emanuel and now play either Ravens Wood or the other Croydon giant, Whitgift, in Round 2.

Simon Langton were excellent at home to Sutton Valence and now host The Judd, while Langley Park won a tight one over Christ’s Hospital to set up a home tie vs Hurstpierpoint College, who were excellent at home to Reigate Grammar on Tuesday.

South West A

Sir Thomas Rich’s and Monmouth will go head to head in Round 2 after magnificent performances in Round 1 against Marling and The Crypt respectively. Kingswood or Bristol Grammar will host either Collegiate or Downside once those two first round games are played.

Meanwhile there will be a Taunton derby with King’s College as hosts after their 24-15 victory over Richard Huish and Taunton School as visitors after they sprung the result of the round by beating Millfield 22-15 on Wednesday. A superb effort from the Somerset side. Exeter School were excellent on Wednesday and will host Ivybridge Community College, whose brilliant early season form was again on show with a 24-5 defeat of last year’s semi finalists, Blundell’s.

South West B

RGS High Wycombe, who are a definite contender this year, defeated The Oratory and now host St Edward’s Oxford, who had progressed against Reading Blue Coat over the weekend. Victory for Churcher’s College at Farnborough sees them welcome a Cup great in the form of RGS Guildford in Round 2.

Canford were on song away from home at Clayesmore and now host Sherborne, who were also away at Bryanston. Meanwhile Marlborough College won a really tight one against Bishop Wordsworth’s and will now host Abingdon, who just made it through in a cracking game at home to Dauntsey’s, 22-21.

U18 Continental Tyres Schools Vase Fixtures 9th to 12th September:

 

The Vase still has a lot of games to go and byes to be sorted, so there is little point in looking ahead to Round 2 just yet, but Round 1 has already yielded some outstanding performances all over the country.

The likes of KES Southampton and Ampleforth College are already looking formidable, and with more results to come in there will be a number of others impressing onlookers. We will do a fuller update in advance of Round 2.

Non-Knockout Results:

 

Outside of the knockouts there as action through the week, particularly in Scotland where St Aloysius College won a cracker at Queen Victoria School on Tuesday, 38-26, before Glasgow High won away at North Berwick 36-12 on Wednesday and Robert Gordon’s put in a stunner at home to Trinity Academy, 50-0. Thursday, meanwhile, saw a thriller at Dollar Academy that was just edged by Edinburgh Academy, 35-31.

In England, meanwhile, Kirkham Grammar School were utterly brilliant on Wednesday, beating one of Wales’ finest in the form of Coleg Llanrdillo by an impressive 47-14 margin – made all the more impressive by the fact that they also had a side running out in the Cup and scoring 50. There was another stunning performance on Wednesday, Queen Mary’s Grammar impressing onlookers with a brilliant 57-12 victory at Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby.

Tuesday had seen Clifton College’s 3rd XV enjoy an impressive 22-7 victory over Clifton High, and on Thursday the Wellington College 4th XV was also victorious against 1st XV opposition, beating St Joseph’s College Reading 10-5.
